Probably not. The sensors are passive devices that function as variable resistors as the temperature goes up, the fuel level changes, or the oil pressure goes up. You should be OK, but you need to find out how the original gauges burned up, so that won't happen again. Maybe an inline 2 or 5 Amp fuse on the 12V wire?

Q: Can I retrofit your gauges into my 1979 Mercedes 450sl?

I do not know . are your stock gauges mechanical or electrical?...if electrical will your stock sender work with these gauges?....or will you have to adapt a different sender?

Q: Is the black light indigo blue ?

No, it comes with green and amber build covers that are installed over the light bulbs depending on the color you want the back lighting to be.

Q: What sending unit do I use with this? I have a Yanmar, so the threads need to be metric.

When I bought the VDO gauge I also bought the VDO sending unit. The ice with 2 poles allows you to use the stock dash warning light. I put this gauge on a 73 VW, a 55 Chevy and 86 Chevy truck. I bought the fittings at Ace Hardware. Hope this helps.
