Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair — 4th Edition

Don't know the difference between a seat stay and a chain stay? Regularly over haul bottom brackets and wheels? Can you adjust a derailleur in your sleep? This book is for everyone interested in bike maintenance and repair. Well written, simple to follow directions make most jobs within reach of anyone with the correct tools and basic mechanical aptitude. The first chapter covers fasteners, the types and how to properly secure and loosen them. All types of work are covered. When used in combination with the videos that the author has posted on YT, seemingly complex jobs become possible. I was afraid to touch my disk brakes and shifting at first but now I can change the pads, adjust the brakes, and adjust the shifting if I ever need to. Yes, there was some trial and error (with frustration) involved, but patience and persistence won the day. My last job was to take apart a wheel and service the hubs and bearings. Scary stuff for me but, I did it. Better yet, I had no left-over parts. The book really breaks down what is needed so I can see why some tasks are better done at the bike shop but a surprising amount of work can be done in the home shop.

This is it. It might not cover every single mechanism but darn if it doesn't cover most of them. If you love your bike and want to care for it properly, save yourself the repair shop money and get this book. They also put out a large number of videos that show exactly how to do the work. Also, patronize your local community-run bike shop!

Great organization, good photos, detailed descriptions. I think it can get through just about any repair or maintenance. Paired with Yiu Tube videos, I am going to try to build my first wheel. Yippee!

Kind of like a Chilton or Haynes manual for Bikes. It is a bit generalized for some derailleur adjustments, but it will get you there.

This book is great; wonderfully detailed in most areas, and gives a good overview of different configurations and best practices on how to best maintain, and install older, and newer bikes. It is worth noting, if you are BUILDING a bike, this is still a beneficial resource, but as it is a repair manual, it is primarily based around maintaining and replacing parts and pieces that are already installed. There is limited information about installing components as new, or, for example, how to route cabling in an efficient manner. Yes, there are youtube videos that Calvin has from Park tool that go into greater detail. Are they worth watching? Yes. Do they serve as a good replacement for having a book open, in front of you, while both your hands are busy affixing something to the bike? No. This book is something you can buy once, and always have on hand. Great resource, especially for repair and maintenance.

I've played with fixing my bike in the past. Recently I started helping a friend and realized that I need to learn more. Picked up the ebook version of the Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair. I not only fixed his bike, but improved one of my bikes as well. It is written in a way that anyone can follow. Not your typical boring, snoring tech manual. It is actually easy to read and follow. Highly recommend.

A exellent reference and how to for the job I do less often on bikes. Love it. A must have if you do all your repair.

I have been repairing the “families” bikes for over 40 years - fold ups to tandems - but our new bikes have disc brakes, suspension systems etc way outside my self taught experience. So a proper bike repair manual was urgently needed; this book is a revelation. So if you are new to bike repairs or an experienced mechanic this is THE book - a wealth of comprehensive information- something for every level of bike mechanic. I wish I had bought it years ago.

I initially bought the Dummies Guide to bicycle repair, but found that when I actually got to trying to set up and adjust the brake calipers on my Dad's old Moulton bike, that the procedures and pictures were rather lacking. I found some videos on Park Tools youtube channel and used those to do the job quite easily. I came across their video of the Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair and bought that afterward and then found some tips on brake set up that would have saved me even more time compared to their videos which were also good. The content in this book is clear, logical and well presented. The illustrations are also clear and show what you need to see clearly. Coupled with the youtube content you can really attack these jobs with confidence. There is a lifetimes worth of experience from the author being communicated clearly to the reader. It is excellent value for money.
