The Collected Poems of Dylan Thomas – The Original Edition Paperback – Illustrated, 14 May 2010

Two pieces of Dylan Thomas poetry was read at my father's funeral that's why I wanted to have this.

Something I shall take my time over and go back to again and again. Such a talented man.

I am lucky enough to have a first edition of the original collection and, over years of constant use, it has gradually fallen apart; I glued it together again and even stuck firmer card inside the covers before gluing it again! It is a total mess of a book. All of this atests to its interest for me and very regular reading (not to mention a bookshelf above the radiator - not a good idea). The "Collected Short Stories" met a similar fate for the same reasons. (My comments on the binding are not intended as a criticism just evidence of the wonderful collection this book contains.)Reading this, there is no need for a review of Thomas's poetry. It is good to have a new edition, i.e. a re-print of the original collection with such a history and a brief introduction to the edition and poetry; this an excellent collection of his poetry and I much prefer it to any "selected works" because not every editor knows my taste! (Not so sure about the cover design thought.)Dylan Thomas himself selected the contents of COLLECTED POEMS:1934-1952 and it contains, in his own words, "Most of the poems I have written and all, up to the present year [1952] that I wish to preserve." What better editor could there have been?

日本の詩人、中原中也は、よく「日本のランボオ」と、呼ばれるが、果たしてそうか？　私見では、「中原中也は、日本のデュラン・トマスである」と、思う。　お酒に目が無い、のん兵衛で、女性が好きだった。　それなのに、書いた詩は、真正。こう言った点、この２人は、とても良く似ている。　ただし、中原中也は、戦前に亡くなった人で、デュラン・トマスは、戦後の詩人だが。　デュラン・トマスは、子供の時分、試験の成績が悪くて、教師から注意されても、「将来、ボクは、詩人になるんです」と言って、突っぱねていたとか。　デュラン・トマスは、自作の詩の、朗読会で、アメリカ渡米中に客死。たった３９歳だった。　モーツァルトにしろ、デュラン・トマスにしろ、何故、神様は、才人を若くして召されるのだろう？　何でも、デュラン・トマスが、台本を書き、ストラヴィンスキーが曲を付ける、オペラの構想が、あったとか。　完成していたら、ホフマンスタール＆Ｒ．シュトラウスの、「ばらの騎士」と、双璧だったかもしれぬ。　ああ、聴いて見たかった！

Auch wenn mir nicht alle Ausdrücke geläufig sind, so bin ich doch ganz angetan von seinen Werken. Ich meine er offenbart sich selbst. Wenn man sich dann noch die passende CD , vorgetragen von Richard Burton, den ich einfach umwerfend und faszinierend finde, anhört, dann ist es ein Erlebnis.
