Great end of the series, sad that this is it. Or is it?

Underwhelming conclusion (no spoilers)
2 out of 5 when compared to the other instalments.I loved this series, and the lush colouring really takes the art to the next level. However, as the final instalment, I found the ending bizarrely rushed, which felt like a shame.I thought the biblical references (where did all of that come from??) reduced the impact of otherwise interesting moments, and the sheer irony of one comment about the bible being "written by a bunch of men" wasn't lost of me when reading a story about 4 girls and a host of other POC women written by a white dude. Really makes me want to read more comics/graphic novels about women BY women.Brian K Vaughan's story was fun, but it wasn't as magical as I'd hoped it would be. The art, though, is consistently incredible and was far and away the best part of the work. I did also have a whale of a time translating the futuristic alphabet. I really wish more effort had been put into the quality of the story, and less into artificially tying up loose ends.

Poor ending to a series that started out brilliantly
I have now, against my better judgement read the whole of the Paper Girl’s series of which this is the last book (No. 6). I started off really liking the series but as the story developed I was less enamoured of it and its failings became more and more obvious. At first I was not clear why this was, it was a time travels story with quite relatable characters and relied heavily on 80s popular culture, which I remember. I did work it out in the end, and by the end I mean this last book in the series which is where many of the cracks become obvious Just to be clear because I have noticed that some, but not all of the reviews I write of e-books I brought from the Amazon Kindle store are not stamped ‘Verified purchase’. I have no idea why but in this case I brought the whole series, books 1-6 as e-books from the Amazon Kindle store. I have to say I really enjoy reading comic books on Kindle but throwing the image up on to the big telly is even better. This paragraph is a bit of a spoiler. The whole story in brief three young paper girls in a suburb of Cleveland encounter a new paper girl in the pre-dawn chill of their rounds … and then get involved in a time-war between the first time traveller and their far ancestors, who are teenagers. The girls have scary adventures intimately entwined with the time-war. They are fundamental in achieving peace between the warring factions and are returned to their own time with no memory of what happened to them. The art I really enjoyed, especially the colours with the muted almost pastels occasionally giving way to bright primary colours to emphasis a moment or characters. I liked the characters when they worked but they often didn’t. It was the plot, the milieu and the right on credentials of the series that spoiled it for me.So my grouches are, first the story tries to be a Heinleinesque Bootstrapper where all the ends are nicely wrapped up by the end of the story, unfortunately the time-travel mechanism and its effects are not internally self-consistent or logical. In particular the idea that you can re-write the single time-line many times and change all sorts of stuff but can’t change your date of death does not work. Second, the milieu is inconsistent, the 1980 are nicely realised but the future with its strange church promoting the inviolability of the time-line and at the same time an almost recognisable Cleveland was somewhere between poorly explained and tripe. It is totally unclear why it is just teenagers in the far future rebelling against the ideas and edicts of the first time travellers. It might be because it is expected to appeal to teenaged purchasers of the books but it makes no sense. Thirdly, I am not really comfortable with a trio of mature blokes writing a story about twelve year old girls especially when the story involves first periods, coming out as a Lesbian and sexual violence at a very early age but when the writer and artists start and continue with an extremely misogynist view of the world it really jars with me. Some of the ideas which came across in the books were, men are the source of all the problems, all teenaged boys are physical and sexual threats to teenaged girls and in this story men are nearly always adversarial. Now I have no problem with these sort of ideas coming from women and girls, I may or may not agree with them depending upon context but it comes across as a very unhealthy and creepy form of fan service for young girls and women here. I did however like the idea that the inventor of time travel was a woman. Next, possibly because of the mature male authorship the Paper Girls sometimes come across as young girls but often behave as boys and they all four possess the wisdom and savvy of young women in their 20s. Lastly, the ending of the time-war is a bad, bad, plot hole. Even a moment’s thought and you realise that the arrangements made and proposed would never work and the terms negate the way the Paper Girls are treated. So overall I gave this last book two stars, the earlier books (1,2,3) are much better but I did enjoy the journey.

Time for friends
Sixth volume in the series of paperbacks that collect issues of the comic 'Paper Girls.' The story of four teenage newspaper delivery girls in 1980's America, who get caught up in time travel shenanigans. This is the final volume, so it's obviously not a jumping on point. New readers should start with volume one.As with other volumes, this does contain strong language, one or two adult references, and some violence, so it's really just for mature readers. It collects issues twenty six to thirty of the comic. Issue thirty was a double length finale, so really you get six comics here. There are chapter pages to show where one issue ends and another begins. After the end of the last book, the girls are scattered. Can they find their way back to each other? And the way home? And can the war be brought to an end? If so, what will be the cost? The time travel stuff never gets too convoluted, and is pretty clever at points. But the great thing about this volume, and what makes it a good resolution, is that it puts the characters first and foremost. And their friendships. There are good points, some of which could be cliched but are things you should never tire of hearing, about such. There are some panels which are really very eye catching as the art conveys character emotion superbly. And the finale is great. You really don't want it to end, and to never see these characters again. But all things do end, which is why this does. With a nice final shot.A really good emotional and nice finale to what's been a great journey with some great characters. A superb read.

Sad that the series has to come to a close! Definitely worth a read
Happened upon at the library, after reading Vaughan and Fiona Staple's Saga series (amazing). Had to finish the series, so I ordered vol 6.This is a fun YA Sci-fi story with engaging character personalities, plot/time lines, and action. The colouring is excellent and the angular art style is cool!

All around greatness
If you’re about to start or have started this series, I’m thrilled for you. This was a great journey. I read all six books in one shot, hooked from the first issue and plowed through to the last. There are so many twists and turns along the way, so many amazing moments. Brian K. Vaughn and crew have created characters that are easy to fall in love with, and you’ll want to be with them every step of their crazy journey. The artwork is beautiful throughout, really fitting in with the story. These books rightfully won as many awards as they did. Paper Gurls is of the highest quality in story telling.

Endlich abgeschlossen
Leider kein toller Abschluss.
