but once I connected with the story and the characters I felt the author gave a good insight into what alcoholism can do to a family
It took me a little while to get into this book, but once I connected with the story and the characters I felt the author gave a good insight into what alcoholism can do to a family. Cynthie showed a lot of courage and character to face up to becoming an alcoholic (as her Mother was no role model) and having the conviction to attend an AA program which helped her face her fears and progress her strengths and through it, have the maturity at 18 to take on the responsibility of looking after her handicapped brother Bill, who she loved very much, showed the heartwarming side of the story. Would certainly recommend as a good teen read.

Another Winner! Coming of age
What a great book. When I first started reading it, I got so depressed I wasn't sure if I wanted to finish the book. But I've read other books by Catherine Ryan Hyde and knew she was taking me on a journey that eventually I'd be glad I continued to the end. And WOW am I glad I stuck with her. Cynthia is the main character. When the book begins she is only 13 years old. Cynthia has lived a hard, horrible life. Reading about it will break your heart. I'm not going to tell anymore about the story but I will say to anyone who wants to read a good book with great characters, this is one not to miss. I very rarely purchase books, but I will be looking to purchase, borrow more Catherine Ryan Hyde stories-I mean books.

I enjoyed this book
written from the perspective of a 13 year old and the choices she made growing up in a single parent alcoholic household...alcoholism and neglect is real and unfortunately generational.I have also seen society stereotype and put people in a bucket up on a shelf bc it's too ugly and, and if they oversimplify and distance themselves from other human beings by doing this, they get to avoid and pass judgement. it's ignorant and sad, but the older I get the more I see it just is... remember it is not necessary to earn the respect of such selfish and ignorant people. maybe this book can help those who do judge, see that survivors of alcoholism in their family are truly incredible people and deserve respect if not admiration for overcoming such hardship vs the alternative of judgement and superiority so often demonstrsted. which is false superiority by the way...so hats off to all survivors !! you are to be celebrated, not cast aside. don't let anyone let u feel like less....good story, and a simplistic and honest depiction of how being around or becoming an addict is. good read for those who stereotype and good read for those directly affected by alcoholism. it's not a super heavy book. but it has a lot of power I think.

Catherine Ryan Hyde never disappoints!
Whether reading one of her early books or a more recent one, I'm always fully engaged every moment! The CRH's books that I've read so far (maybe 10) are varied in subject, context and the development of the story. The main thing they have in common is that love, faith, hard work and perseverance can turn things around.

Just disappointed
I have found with this writer you just never know what you're going to get. I've really enjoyed several of her books, but this one, not so much. Actually not at all. The girl is too young at thirteen to be going to AA meetings. Sure she drank some and had a horrific car wreck but it feels like she should have had an adult step up and show some love way before anyone did. Just boring, unrealistic and I wish I had a do over and not bought this book. Even if someone reads this and is a recovering alcoholic, it just skims the surface. She is a child. Zach was a let down, the sponsor was strange. The grandparents should never have left her with her mom. A young girl living with an alcoholic mom with boyfriends coming into and out of their lives. Not even interesting.

Can’t be outdone
I don’t know of any other author that can touch my heart like Catherine Ryan Hyde. Her use of words to describe the things that people think and feel is beyond anything I have ever read. It’s like she gets to the very soul of her characters. She is, without a doubt, my favorite author and this book is another of her masterpieces.
