bought a second one as a gift, one year later
Moves the air, fast, through the length of my 900sqft house. I can come home, fling open the doors, and whoosh the hot air out within minutes. I don't use a clothes dryer; I hang up the clothes in the spare room and dry them with this fan.Expecting fall heat waves, I just bought a second one for my boyfriend's hot little apartment.Quiet, sturdy. Easy to move around with the handle. My model (purchased here a year ago) has adjustable nuts on the pivot, which is good because the force of the air makes them unscrew themselves, which allows the fan to tilt up toward the ceiling instead of where I had aimed it. I got tired of retightening them and added my own washers under the nuts, and never had a problem again. This was inconvenient, and the company should have thought of this, but I don't think it is worth knocking off a star. I hope that the one I'm sending to him will also have adjustable nuts. (I mention this because I have a smaller Polar-Aire, also a cradle design, which only has grommets, which means I have to jam something into the pivot to maintain its position. It never occurred to me to carefully examine pictures of fans on Amazon to make sure that they would have appropriate hardware.)This fan is big, note well. You need to be able to place it on the floor or on a big table where there is room for its four feet. It won't fit on most window sills, unless you put a board under it.

This replaced our last Patton after 18 years
We bought a similarly sized Patton fan 18 years ago, when living in an apartment without air conditioning. At the time, the price was very similar to the current price of this fan. We were very impressed (and grateful!) for the way that thing moved air through the apartment and cooled things off. Over the years, it had a lot of use. Five years ago we moved into our current home, and hung it from a hook on the wall of the garage to circulate air in what is usually a hot and stuffy space. The Patton fan once again came through for us, making longer jobs in a hot garage more bearable. Unfortunately, a couple weeks ago, the motor finally burned out.Eighteen years is a good long time for the last fan to have served us, so I felt the cost of purchasing a new Patton was justified, especially considering how well the last fan cooled things off. We've used other brands of fans in other parts of the house, but the Patton seems to have a design that moves air like no other. Not only does our new Patton work just as well as the last one, keeping things cooler and significantly improving air flow, it is also quieter! This was an unexpected and appreciated improvement. The dial is also easier to operate. I'm looking forward to many more years of a Patton-cooled garage.

Best Fans you can buy
Patton is the best fan on the market. Would never buy anything else. Quiet, Efficient, moves a lot of air for its size. I have found that this 14 inch model is best for in-house use. The larger sizes tend to be very noisy. ( as they move more air and will sound like a turbo-prop aircraft) But this 14 inch ,odel does the job, and much less expensive than running the A/C.

I do NOT recommend this fan--but I tell you which one I do
I was shocked when this fan arrived (& its identical larger "brother," an 18-inch one), & I removed its box. I had read the many positive reviews, but the quality I saw as it arrived was appalling. The plastic switch was extremely cheap looking, like it could break at any moment, though it was new; that was my first impression of its quality. The switch also put out an annoying high pitched vibration sound sometimes, from the plastic parts vibrating together. I am not exaggerating to say that I was in shock, & before even turning it on was making mental plans to return it. The grill was light, & would probably last a long time with care, but definitely not heavy duty as I expected. The motor seemed to work well, the fan was reasonably high speed, but I believe you have to buy products based on its weakest link. If the switch breaks, what do you do? Sure, it can be replaced, but at what cost in time, effort & materials? I also have to conclude the rest of the unit is not high quality if the switch is not, logically speaking. But even with a quality switch, I would have been very disappointed, especially considering the high price (though I would not have paid $20 for this fan in a store, seeing its quality in person; the whole fan looked cheap).I immediately started research again for a quality fan, & before long came across Air King fans (on Youtube). You could tell from the demonstrations that people were excited about the quality of these fans--they were heavy, powerful, & had ball bearing motors, which are much superior, apparently (the small Air King 12" model only has the typical sleeve bearing). To my great joy, Amazon had these fans, so I bought two of the 18" models (model 9318, for mounting). These Air King fans just scream quality; I could not be happier!! In my research, I could find nothing close to this quality, & Amazon had the best price.

If you have tinnitus, the significant white noise from this fan may be beneficial
Pros: This is a nice fan. Much bigger than expected. It moves a much wider swath of air than the Vornados; it has sturdy, foam feet to dampen vibration; the fan is tiltable.Con: Unfortunately, with the thin, aluminum fan blades, it produces significant noise even at low setting - and even if you are sitting several feet from the fan. Also it doesn't seem to have a 'low' setting. The medium and low setting are both quite strong so both settings are noisy. This is not a 'TV' fan. For example, if you are using this fan to cool you off on your exercise bike while watching TV - no go. I had planned to use it to pull air from my tube amp to ventilate the tubes a bit while listening to music, but the fan noise can be heard thru my headphones so I had to return the fan. Also if you live in a humid climate and have no air conditioning, the all-metal design of this fan will develop rust quickly.

Quiet and moves a ton of air
This fan is great during the spring and fall - when it's cold enough outside to not need AC, but the air in my condo needs a little push to draw in some of that cool. I have this fan pointed out of a window at one end of the unit, and even at a medium setting pulls enough air all the way through that a cool breeze comes in the other windows. Obviously it makes some noise - I wouldn't want it blowing directly in my face - but positioned strategically it is unnoticeable other than the place being significantly cooler (or fresher, less stale). This really helps to minimize the number of days when AC is needed, so I'm sure it has paid for itself several times over just in the course of a year.

I am somewhat disappointed in the fan
I am somewhat disappointed in the fan. It does not come close to my old fan which was made in the USA. This one makes some noise on the middle setting.
