A helpful and practical text.
Helpful book with practical strategies. Very straightforward and easy to read. This was assigned for a class I took, and it is probably a book I am most likely to refer to after the class is over than any other text I have used recently.

For my class, I originally had the previous edition of this book, but I realized how much information how many additional teaching strategies I was missing I quickly purchased this edition. Really great stuff. It really boosts my repertoire of teaching strategies and they seem very engaging, excited to try them with my classes in the fall.

Must read for ALL teachers
If every educator in the US read this and applied the techniques and strategies and really took this to heart, we would revolutionize education. This is as good a text for teachers without ESL/ELL learners as it is for those who have such students.

It is easy to read
Assigned this for class. It is easy to read, the author really gets to the point, and offers a lot of suggestions on techniques that can be used in the classroom. It discusses some theory, but also gives a lot of examples of practice.

Common sense or...
Im sure this might be a good book but for some reason my professor had us read it backward...so it was a little confusing. I feel like a lot of the information in there is common sense.

This book makes a strong case for the integration of language and content learning, with a focus on research-proven contexts and strategies that help ensure success for all students. It provides multiple examples of authentic "classroom talk" such as teacher-guided reporting, student "rehearsal for reporting", and a teacher talking with children explicitly about how to work together collaboratively. It also includes activities for developing all aspects of language learning, demonstrating how these can be meaningfully integrated with subject knowledge as part of a holistic curriculum. Particularly useful is the chapter on learning to write in a second language and culture, which describes some common school genres in terms of their purpose, organization, structure (connectives) and other language features (such as tense and specific vocabulary). The chapter also provides a question framework for assessing writing which can be used to assess individual student's writing, build up a class profile, or adapted for self-assessment purposes. The final chapter is dedicated to developing integrated units and provides guidance on "finding the language in the content" so as to make language-learning explicit across the curriculum. Suggestions for further reading are listed at the end of each chapter.

Excellent
Excellent book. Thought provoking with practical approach to EAL. I read this 16 years ago as a student reader and it shaped my approach to teaching English. Has been helpful to return to this book after a career break.

Libro bellissimo
Consegna puntualissima!
