Completely sold on this shoe!
This is a great pair/brand of shoe. I ordered a pair for myself a while back for a girls hiking trip. They are durable, true to size, and get comfortable that I ended up working in them as I am on my feet all day. My husband needed a shoe for the same type of quality for work and I booked bought him a pair for him to try. He’s very satisfied with them and gives him the support he was needing to be on his feet all day. Would recommend to anyone.

Good shoe.
My husband used these as his only shoes on a 3 week African trip. He said they were very comfortable. They are heavy shoes but it didn't seem to bother him.

Shoe is good, but laces won't stay tied
Over the years, I have purchased many pairs of these Merrell hiking shoes. They work well for hiking on tough rocky terrain, but can be dangerously slippery on smooth rock surfaces. They may be waterproof, but your feet will still feel cold and wet if they get wet since they are not insulated. I get a good 5 months of daily walking out of these shoes before the sole becomes worn enough that it is time to replace them. The laces that come with these shoes look fantastic, but are like a torture device. No matter what you do, after a few weeks they will not stay tied! They will automatically become untied even if you do not move at all. There is even a YouTube video which features this same shoe and is about a special type of knot which is supposed to stay tied.My solution for the shoelace problem is to immediately replace the laces with Danner Premium Laces, 54". The Danner laces stay tied, and they will last as long as at least two pairs of these Merrell hiking shoes (I transferred the laces from shoe to another and they still seemed like new).

These ARE NOT great out of the box.
I bought these because of the great luck I've had with the last pair of Merrells I bought nearly 8 years ago. Now THOSE were comfortable out of the box. Sanuks and Hey Dudes are comfortable out of the box... These are the OJ of footwear. The footbed is hard as a rock and the Vibram outer sole is stiff and not pliable. Wore them for a 4 hour half work day and thought I was gonna die. It took seemingly endless 2-3 hour stints to get them to the point they are today. They do get better. The only thing I could do to make them bearable was to switch the removable insoles with a set from a new pair of Hey Dudes. Remarkably the switch made both shoes better.I've now got about 40 or so hours of actually standing/walking time in them. They have softened up about 50% but still now what I'd consider a truly comfortable shoe. I wear mine on heavy rain days because unlike Sanuks and Hey Dudes, the chunky Vibram soles keep my feet dry above the parking lot puddles at work. They seem to breath well and have a roomy toe box. Excellent traction btw.Seems like a quality shoe, but whoever says they're comfortable out of the box either has nerve damage or feet made of steel. Either way just be prepared for a month long break in of an hour or two a day.

Great for Wide Feet
Comfortable, durable, and great for wide feet. My son has a hard time finding wide enough shoes that fit him, and these have been a lifesaver. Would purchase again.

Great shoe
I’ve owned many pairs of this hiking shoe. Love them. I am sure this pair of shoes were sold and returned before I got them. The left one made a popping sound when I walked. I am guessing that’s why they were returned. Went on a 6 mile hike and the sound went away after a couple of miles.

vs. Oboz Firebrand and Columbia Valley Pointe
I tested these against the similar, Oboz Firebrand II BDry (more expensive) and the Columbia Men's Valley Pointe (less expensive), all in the same size and width. All three share similar profiles and technical characteristics. I found the Columbia's less comfortable, with a cramped footbed (even in wide). Construction felt cheaper as well. They seemed like decent shoes for the money, but I suspect they'd fall short in terms of comfort and durability with heavy use. The Oboz and Merrill versions seemed equally comfortable and both of very high quality. They main difference for me was in the design of the outsole, which was more aggressively lugged for the Oboz shoes, making them more suitable for rough, off-trail hiking. The Merrill sole has deep ribbing, but a less aggressive tread pattern, providing less resistance on smoother surfaces. Since I plan to use them mostly in cities and only occasionally off road, I went with the Merrills.

Comfortable boots that last about 150 miles
I bought these boots in March of 2023 mostly for playing disc golf. I play 2-3 rounds per week. They were very comfortable and did a good job of protecting my feet from stumps, etc. The sole just came loose from one of the boots. Back of the envelope math says I had less than 150 miles in them. I would think they would have lasted longer but for the price, I guess I got what I paid for.
