Please, please, pretty please, hire an editor!
I pre-ordered this book and started reading it the moment it downloaded. So, did someone upload a draft of this book by mistake? There is a five star story here that is crippled by atrocious editing (or maybe no editing whatsoever). Poor grammar, missing spaces between words, and typos abound. Here are a few examples off the top of my head: "hen" instead of "Then" (yes, the first word of a sentence was missing the capital T numerous times); "top" instead of "to"; "of" instead of "off"; "Demo9n" instead of "Demon". And some of the names of the supporting characters mysteriously changed during the same chapter such as the names of the Alva army casualties or the name of Qin's basic foundations instructor at the Foundation Guild. I love the world building and character development. The main characters have true character, morals, are eminently likable. But the piss poor editing detracts from following the story and instead makes the reader wish the book was a Word document so that he could correct the mistakes as he goes along (also why it took me two days to read it instead of one). Poor editing was an issue with the author's Emerilia series as well but that was more understandable as he was releasing a new book every month. But there was a long break between books 3 and 4; there was time for proof reading and editing. It just wasn't done. Mr. Chatfield please hire an editor and send out an update of the book for future readers.

Even though 3 stars I Love the series and would recommend, but editing is the worst this time.
I would recommend this series. I rarely buy advance release anymore. I usually wait for the reviews. I just had to have the 4th in the series. Love the story line. Just this time really have to note the editing was not the greatest, the amount of errors became really annoying. Here are some gross samples of the errors:stirred up. he fog wasthem. they put theirhalf a dozen hey instead of "they"storing formation was. Starting to like the idea of the books more than the books themselves
UPDATE AT THE BOTTOMWhen I read book one, I was thrilled. A Wuxia book with characters that had depth and caring. I saw the flaws in the book, but I mostly ignored them. When I read book two, I was still happy. Lots of fun adventure with people worth cheering for. When I read book three, I felt it dragged in places. Quite a few places. But I still liked it.But this book:1. The people rescued from the dungeon have no reason to care about anybody other than Eric's and Rugrats' team. But they decide to go exploring anyway. Sure, exploring makes sense. But it didn't feel like they were ever going to come back. It's like the author decided "Oops, these guys are too high a level. I better get rid of them."2. The author really likes to talk about the military training. He does it a lot. Do other people like this? I didn't.3. The intelligence level of the two main pets seems to change at will. Sometimes they understand complete sentences. Other times, they're no smarter than the average dog.4. Desperately needs proofreading. All of these books are just a bit ...less when you read them the second time. Flaws jump out more, boring parts seem to last longer. I've reread the other books. But if I reread this book, I may drop my score down to two stars.UPDATE:Gave into temptation and read the book again after an update was pushed. Number of visible errors I found has dropped DRAMATICALLY. The book literally went from hundreds of errors to tens. ...I wasn't really counting, but maybe found 30 total? (Kinda odd why some are still in the book. Half of the errors are spacing errors and very easy to see.)Not sure if it was just error fixing or if sections were rewritten and/or deleted. But pet intelligence doesn't seem as jarring and discussions regarding military training don't seem to be as long.Anyway, now that the book is actually readable, it's a 5 star book. But I'm only giving 4 stars for now because I'm still very angry that we were given such a massive disaster originally. And those remaining errors should be cleaned up.

I love the series, just binged all 3 of the first ones to get to this one. Just to find an unreadable mess. Seriously, this is not a Kindle Unlimited release, if you are going to charge for a book, then do your job and make sure it is ready for release. Breaking continuity with constant misspellings is enough to make me drop this series.

Great story, poor proof reading
Enjoyed the story throughout and felt it was a great follow on from the previous books, my only issue was that the book did not seem to have any polishing. What i mean is that there were obvious issues in spelling or words mashed together or cut apart e.g. tor eact - instead of to react. It just seemed like no one used a spell checker on the story or read the final draft before it got published. These errors, although minor, detract from an otherwise successful story.

Great story, poor spellcheck
After reading my way through the first four realms I am happy to see this book take a more focused approach. My main dislike from book 2 and 3 stemmed mainly from the stories being split between Erik and Rugrat and other small Alvan groups. With the consolidation of the different groups in this book to face the new threat the pacing is able to be well maintained instead of disjointed. I also found it much easier to follow which made the read more enjoyable than the previous two instalments. My only real gripe is the proofread was poorly done and I was left correcting the words and sentences in my head to make sense of some of the things being said before I could continue reading.

So darned good!
The other reviews on this book are correct, there are some formatting and editing errors on this book if you had the day one release, as Amazon sent out the wrong version (author posted on his Facebook). However, this really isn’t a massive issue, as new purchases should get the new version.Onto the book: Built upon the previous books foundation, expanded all the best bits, and rather than compromise, just wrote a longer book. Much less stat-blocky than the previous entries, and any given information was much more precise.

A good book marred by terrible editing.
This book wasn't ready to be released. It's full to the brim with sleeping mistakes, grammatical issues and continuity errors. I had to read parts several times and go back pages to make sure of what was intended. The content is great. Though personally I feel the introduction of characters that are only about for half a chapter, being built up like they'll mean something and then never being heard from again was a bit of a waste. While it's nice to hear about all the different goings on with everyone sometimes it's a bit breakneck.I'd highly recommend the book once it is edited properly and am looking forward to the rest of the series. It'd also be nice to see some spin off`s about the different characters to build on them with out overcrowding the main story.

The story continues
If you haven't read the previous 3 books then this one will not make much sense. In this book Eric and Rugrat take the Avla army to the 4 realm and immediately find trouble. The army seeks to rescue a city's population from siege and assault. The focus is on the methods of conducting the battles and what happens in the aftermath. For the military geeks amongst us this has some realism, but also some omissions, nevertheless I liked the story. I do wish Michael would invest in a spellchecker, us grumpy old farts prefer words and sentenced in good English.
