Classic Southern Design but a bit dull
There are 12 homes featured in this book, including the designers own home in the final chapter ‘Urban Gentry’. As I read through each chapter, I felt the design seemed a bit feminine for my tastes, although in flipping through the photos later I didn’t feel as much of that. Perhaps it was some of the more frill details that lend that feeling but not sure. Although the homes are certainly nice, I felt they were a bit monochromatic and I found myself drawn more to the offices and studies, and a few other rooms where the designer introduce more intense colors. Overall the homes have similar look and feel. I did find an editing issue when Ross described his own home. At one point he describes removing the rear staircase so that the kitchen would feel less isolated and flow with the surrounding rooms, however, from the photos I couldn’t get a feel for that flow. Also, he described some changes he made to his front main staircase but there are no photos of that at all, one of my ‘pet peeves’ in design books. I debated whether to give the book a 4 or 5 rating. While the homes are very nice, I would have appreciated more imagination in the design. In the end I went with a rating of 4.

Great gift!
Classic Southern design captured beautifully in the photography. I gave this as a gift to my favorite Southern friend, who LOVED it. I highly recommend.

The title says it all...
I felt that the title of this book gives a glimpse into the pages... "Enduring", being the key word. I have seen Eric's work in person and the beauty is that he could have done it yesterday or 10 years ago and it is enduring, timeless and traditional in the best way. This is not an, "editorial" type volume. It is a study in casual elegance for how we live today. It is a template by which those of us who live in suburbia or a sprawling estate can aspire to a comfortable, not too precious and a little bit english or french country house.
