Paganini Complete Edition

Wow! Paganini composed music that contain the best of classical. On the one hand the baroque masters would love the refined, disciplined, beautiful melodies and harmonies. On the other hand modernists will appreciate the next level of melodic adventure (without the screechy dissonance of some modern composers) that challenges the limits of the norms.

Riconosco il grande merito alla Dynamic della divulgazione delle opere di Paganini, perché nella sua lunga -e gloriosa- attività ha letteralmente disseminato il relativo mercato con incisioni di pregio, consentendo a tutti -appassionati e non- di accedere alle opere del nostro con estrema facilità.Sulla qualità artistica degli esecutori e sulla bontà della ripresa del suono, non spenderò una parola (5 stelle, anche 6 se fosse possibile). Mi aspettavo però che questo cofanetto (ben 40 CD!) colmasse le lacune finora presenti in discografia, ma purtroppo non è così. Ad esempio:1. mancano diverse opere (es. MS 93 e 95), pur incise da altri artisti per altre etichette;2. nella sezione "Works for Violin and Orchestra" ci sono numerose opere eseguite nella versione per violino e pianoforte (!);3. manca la versione A della Sonata MS 66 (la versione B è eseguita con violino/pianoforte), incisa da altri artisti per altre etichette;4. manca La Tempesta, MS 52;5. ecc.Il CD 35 è il più interessante, perché propone tutte le opere vocali e due opere per violino e chitarra in "prima incisione mondiale", però:- "Sul margine d'un rio" è stata già incisa nel 2001 da Nella Anfuso (CD STILNOVO SN 8806), altro che prima registrazione mondiale, come riportato nell'indice delle tracce;- la ripresa del suono delle due opere per violino e chitarra (MS 121, 122) poteva essere più accurata, visto che anche i respiri del violinista sono in primo piano nella scena sonora;- la durata complessiva del disco è di 22 minuti.Anzi, tutti i CD, mediamente, non superano la durata media dei 60 minuti, moltissimi sono parecchio sotto la media, 4 CD sono monografie (opere ripetute) e/o propongono opere di altri autori (variazioni su opere di Paganini), di dubbia utilità artistica: probabilmente, riorganizzando meglio la pubblicazione nel suo complesso, il cofanetto poteva essere meno corposo.I 40 CD sono contenuti in singole bustine di carta bianca, tipo quelle che si vendono in confezioni da 50 al supermercato.Che la progettazione artistica e tecnica di questo box sia stata 'tirata via' lo si intuisce anche dal booklet, che riporta solo una breve biografia di Paganini scritta da D. Prefumo: non aspettatevi quindi dettagliate esegesi sui brani incisi, presenti invece nei rispettivi booklet delle edizioni su CD singolo della Dynamic.Da sottolineare che nemmeno i brevi testi delle opere vocali di Paganini, vera novità mondiale di questo box, hanno trovato spazio nel suddetto booklet. Peccato.

Disclaimer: I’m afraid I don’t have an analytical understanding of classical music, so apologies in advance for any shortcomings in my review.Blimey O’Riley, you get your moneys worth here with this 40-disc odyssey, good sound quality mind (some Paganini CD's I've brought in the past have been on the quiet side).Paganini’s best know works are all present & correct, firstly with the six Violin Concerto, performed by Teatro Carle Felice di Genova Orchestra, Concerto two is also repeated on the 37th disc but with Accardo on lead violin, as is the 1st & fourth Concerto (disc 38) with Ricci taking lead violin. What I enjoy about the Concertos is the drama & tension between the solo violin & the rest of the orchestra, it’s amazing sonic contrast.There are two versions of probably Paganini’s most performed works, 24 Caprices, the first is performed by Leoidas Kavacos, but the more successful is Ricci’s, which he attacks with real vim & Vigour.I think the weakest part of the boxset is the chamber music, it’s has it moments, with some nice melodies, but for me the pieces lack the drama of his other works.Perhaps because I’m a bit of a rock music fan, but I do enjoy Paganini’s solo guitar pieces, again with some great melodies, although a lot of them are frustratingly short.The surprise highlight for me is the final two discs that feature Marco Pasini piano interpretations of Paganini’s works (such as Frantz Liszt, Grandes Etudes de Paganini (1851 No.1 in G minor & Robert Scumann, Etudes pour le pianoforte d’apres des caprices de Paganini Op. 3 No.1 in A minor). They are quite a refreshing change of pace after 38 discs of strings, plus there’s certainly a touch of menace in Pasini’s playing.There are also a few odds n’ sods through in as well, including a Jimi Hendrix style interpretation of “God save the Queen” & operatic versions of Ghiribizzo & Sul margine d’un rio & E’ pur amabile sung by Lucia Cortese.Also included is a well written booklet, detailing whats on each of the discs & a 22 page bio of Paganini’s life.There are a couple of criticisms of the set, firstly is the actual box is quite thin card & the discs are in paper/plastic sheaths , but this probably Dynamics way of keeping the costs down & although I love the music of Paganini (I wouldn't have forked out £50 odd quid for the boxset), there isn't enough good pieces to warrant 40 discs.So buying “Nicolo Paganini Complete Edition” is a bit of a double-edged sword, as it does mean I've now got all of his music & unless some new manuscripts are unearthed, then this is it, still it should keep me going for quite a while.

Diese Cd-Box ist ein Meilenstein in der Musikgeschichte.Erstmals werden alle verfügbaren Werke von Paganini in einer Box präsentiert (inklusive einiger Weltersteinspielungen!!!).Die Aufnahmen sind durchweg in guter Qualität aufgenommen.Die Box selbst enthält neben den 40 Cds (leider in Papierhüllen) ein über 100 Seiten starkes Booklet mit vielen Hintergrundinformationen zu Leben und Werk Paganinis.Ein besonderer Höhepunkt ist die Einspielung der Violinkonzerte auf Paganinis eigener Violine!!!!!!!Desweiteren kann man hier hören, dass Paganini nicht nur ein virtuoser Geiger (der beste den es jemals gab) war, sondern auch ein hervorragender Gitarrist gewesen sein muss.Absolute Kaufempfehlung.Das Beste was es zu Paganini gibt!!!!!

The music is glorious, of couse since it is composed for the most part by Paganini who could do much more than play and compose for the violin. Some of the music is played on his personal violin and there are several pieces that had not been heard or recorded before. However, the booklet is a shambles, with whole pages misprinted and so many conflict between the listings on the Dynamic records website and elsewhere on the web, that it is difficult to believe who is playing where. It is one of those time to turn off your brain and let the music flow.

Opera pregevole per contenuti e fattura. Mirabile la completezza delle informazioni nel libretto allegato. Ottima la qualità audio e gli esecutori, tra cui Accardo. Prezzo meritatissimo. Grazie di cuore Dynamic.
