Anything you want....your gloved finger is good...but mostly you don't smooth it out....you cut the tip in such a way that the stuff coming out covers both sides of the seam, and you squeeze your caulk gun in a rhythmic fashion and pull the gun in the opposite direction that you started so that the material looks like stacked dimes. something like - Squeeze to start, push the nozzle a little back into the material, squeeze and pull the gun to the next spot, squeeze and push nozzle back into the material......repeat. If you can't it to do that anything can be used ; tongue depressor, screwdriver, or a caulking spreading tool from the box stores.
