And then check where the markings on the main scale and the vernier scale line up perfectly. This is the case one mark left of the 9 on the vernier scale. If it were exactly on the 9, then the total reading would be 5.9mm. But because it's one mark left of the 9 and each of those marks between 8 and 9 is 0.02mm the total is 5.88mm.

As an example, the 3rd line past 1.1 inch gives you 1.175 inches (1.1 + 3 * 0.025), and the vernier scale gives you the rest, if the lines match up at 12 you add 0.012 to the result you got from the regular scale, 1.175 + 0.012 = 1.187.
