Are these suitable for a heavy book (5 or 6 lbs)? Thanks.

Depends on shape and thickness of book. I would use a poly mailer instead as a heavy book could split the seams of mailer and potentially fall out.

How much does one mailer weigh?

Not sure of the weight but I used them to mail portrait packages with 3 8x10’s in each stay flat mailer. The least expensive method to mail was 1.67 through USPS
