Do the bendable arms and legs hold the shape that you bend them to?

No. The hands have Velcro to stick them together and hang it, but the arms are not solid or wired, they are just stuffed.

what is this made of? the outside? the fill?

I bought this for my grandson. I read the description before I ordered it for him. He loves it.

Can this be machine washed?

No, the tag on the sloth says, wipe with a wet cloth, no washing. Also says that it cannot hold the weight of a child.
