what are the boxes made of? cardboard?

Yes. I haven't gotten them out of the box because it is a gift but can tell they are cardboard.

How many strands of linguini come in the set?

I don't remember for sure; maybe 8 or 9. The set is really cute, and the bow ties are adorable. My niece loves it.

What is the pasta made out of?

Pasta is made out of thick felt, ravioli has Velcro so my niece can put the “stuffing” in and take it out when she’s playing chef. She’s had it almost a year and it’s held up well

The pasta is made of sewn felt to give dimension to the pasta shapes. You could wash them carefully by hand. The boxes are made of cardboard so wipe clean only. The pots and utensils are plastic so they can be washed. Very nice quality set and fun to play with. The pretend mat that comes along with it is a nice touch as well and can be wiped clean. Same with the cooking directions that are easy to understand. Very nice, quality toy.
