Throne of Blood [Blu-ray]

Excellent film, excellent filmmaker, excellent & nicely restored Criterion release (with a fairly short but very helpful & interesting extra about the making of the film). This is Macbeth a la Japanese medieval history, influences from Noh theater, stupendous acting (esp from Toshiro Mifune), and mesmerizing camerawork. Kurosawa can film for several minutes two horse riders lost in a fog, and it's absolutely gripping. Moreover, the film set was located on a lower slope of Mt. Fuji—only that area is visible, not the whole mountain, but it's still a meaningful location. All in all, excellence that made me wish the film were longer.When I finished this, my first thought was: Kurosawa's movies make you feel like no one else has ever REALLY known how to make a movie. He was the supreme filmmaker of cinema, even if he thought John Ford was. :) Ever grateful for his body of work, and wishing more of his films were restored and released on BD.

In appropriate black and white, Kurosawa’s vision includes combining the three witches into one, keeping Banquo’s Ghost, and the eeriest Forest of Dunsinane on the move. Macbeth is a compelling story however it’s done, and this is my favorite.

A very good friend recommended this movie to me recently.He was excited to tell me a number of things about it, which also got me excited for the film.This take on Macbeth is wonderful and the transfer and quality was great considering it’s source, and the time it was filmed!

I couldn't possibly pick a single favorite Kurosawa film, but Throne of Blood is definitely in the top two or three.First, regarding the movie itself, the acting, costumes, action sequences and cinematography are all top notch. It contains stunning visuals, such as the pervasive fog-enshrouded landscape, the spirit in the woods and the final sequence with the moving forest. Furthermore, Kurosawa is still unmatched when it comes to filming a large army on the move, as is seen more than once in Throne of Blood (and later in Ran).Toshiro Mifune gives a visceral and energetic performance as Washizu (essentially Macbeth), but perhaps the most memorable role is played by Isuzu Yamada as Asaji (Lady Macbeth), who, in spite of her limited screen time, is chilling and unforgettable due her ruthlessness, emotional detachment, and pessimistic view of human nature.Like the best Kurosawa films, it's also thematically interesting, especially with its exploration of the paranoia that comes from power, leading to a circle of violence springing from the idea of killing your potential rival before they decide to kill you.The Criterion Blu-Ray is also great. The picture is clear, and the sound is as good as can be expected for being monaural. I also found the extras very interesting, especially the essay relating to the difficulties of subtitling Japanese films. The film also includes two separate English subtitle options to reveal the subjectivity of this process. As an occasional translator of Spanish and Portuguese texts I found this fascinating.Throne of Blood is definitely worth having in your collection if you’re a fan of Shakespeare adaptations, Kurosawa, or good drama films in general.

Picture quality is beautiful. All performances are amazing, but of course, the two main characters, played by Toshero Mifune and Minoru Chiaki, is outstanding. Sound is very good, with accurate subtitles in English. Dark, magical, and beautiful to watch.

A KUROSAWA CLASSIC

It is with Ran by the same director a take on a Shakespeare play, in this case, MacBeth. Ran is Lear. They are both moving in their way, especially Ran and the costumes, the acting, the settings take you to another place, another time but the stories they tell are universal. You may notice that I prefer Ran, but that is because I remember certain moving scenes--Lear riding happily with the son he banished right before that son is shot down--it is heart breaking as the death of Cordelia in the original Shakespeare. You cannot forget it. Toshiro Mifune is great in any role, by the way.

Kurosawa never fail to impress. With his take on Macbeth this was one incredible watch

『蜘蛛巣城』(Throne of Blood)('57)出演∶三船敏郎、山田五十鈴、千秋実、志村喬、久保明、太刀川洋一、佐々木孝丸、清水元、高堂国典、上田吉二郎、三好栄子、浪花千栄子、富田仲次郎、藤木悠、堺左千夫、大友伸、土屋嘉男、稲葉義男、笈川武夫、谷晃、沢村いき雄、佐田豊、恩田清二郎、高木新平、増田正雄、浅野光雄、井上昭文、小池朝雄、加藤武特別出演：木村功、宮口精二、中村伸郎監督∶黒澤明劇場やDVDで過去に何度も見た作品だが､今回はCRITERION版Blu-rayで見ました｡(東宝版DVDは随分昔から持ってます)　非常に鮮明な映像で大満足でした。欠点を言えば(アメリカ製だから当たり前だが)､東宝版DVDのように日本語字幕がないこと……(笑)(だって日本語が聴き取りづらいったら……)　英語の字幕はもちろん付いていて､英語表現が興味深く楽しめますが……。やはり､'50年代前後の映画(とくに時代劇)には､日本語字幕があった方が親切でいいと思う。'40年代〜'60年代の黒澤作品(すべて白黒作品)の多くは､学生時代に名画座などの小劇場で初めて見たが､とにかく音が悪くて何を言ってるのか聴き取りづらかった。たぶん録音状態も今より劣るし､今では使われないような言葉や言い回しも多い。黒澤作品(とくに時代劇)では､叫ぶ·怒鳴る·吐き捨てるようなセリフが多いせいかもしれない｡(『七人の侍』を初めて見た時も､慣れるまで殆ど聴き取れませんでしたから…(笑))映画ファンになる前から､黒澤監督の時代劇作品として有名なものは認識していた。『七人の侍』『羅生門』『用心棒』『赤ひげ』などだが､この『蜘蛛巣城』は知りませんでした。とにかく黒澤作品は何でも見てみようという気分で､名画座に掛かった機会に見に行ったのですが､強烈なインパクトを受けました。同じ戦国時代ものでも､『七人の侍』『隠し砦の三悪人』のような娯楽アクションに徹したものとはひと味もふた味も違う。シェイクスピアの『マクベス』を翻案した作品とのことだが､あらすじは知っていた｡(ロマン·ポランスキー監督の映画『マクベス』を見ていたので…)　だから､ストーリー展開を楽しむというものではなかったが､"静"の部分では能楽を思わせるような芝居､"動"の部分では壮絶な"弓矢の嵐"など､原作にはない表現が新鮮だった｡(原作では､マクベスは"女の股から生まれた者には殺されない"と魔物が予言する設定で､帝王切開で生まれた男に殺されるが､日本の戦国時代には帝王切開がなかったらしい(笑))[物語] 戦国時代。蜘蛛巣城では､隣国の城主·乾と結託した北の館の主である重臣·藤巻が謀反を起こすが､二人の猛将·鷲津武時(三船)と三木義明(千秋)の活躍で鎮圧される。喜ぶ主君·都築国春(佐々木)に召された二人は城の前に広がる蜘蛛手の森で､物の怪の老婆(浪花)と出会う。老婆は､鷲津は北の館の主になり､やがて蜘蛛巣城の城主に､三木は一の砦の大将となり､彼の子はやがて蜘蛛巣城の城主になると予言する。二人は一笑に付すが､城に上がった二人はそれぞれ北の館の主と一の砦の大将に任ぜられる。鷲津から話を聞いた妻·浅茅(山田)は､主君·国春にその予言を知られる前に､国春を亡き者にするべきと謀反をそそのかす。国春が隣国の乾を討つため､狩りに行くと見せかけて北の館に出張って来た夜､浅茅は見張りの兵たちを薬で眠らせ､鷲津が国春を殺す。主君殺しの濡れ衣を着せられた武将·小田倉則安(志村)と国春の嫡男·国丸(太刀川)は､他国ヘ逃亡する｡鷲津は､盟友·三木の推挙で蜘蛛巣城の城主となる。子がない鷲津は､物の怪の予言通り自分の後の城主は三木の嫡男·義照(久保)に譲る約束をする。だが､妻·浅茅は懐妊したことを夫に告げ､三木父子を宴に招いて謀殺する計画を持ちかける。鷲津は配下に暗殺を実行させるが､息子·義照は取り逃がしてしまい､その夜から三木の亡霊を見ては錯乱することになる｡やがて､隣国に落ちのびていた小田倉則安·都築国丸·三木義照らが､かねてから蜘蛛巣城を狙う乾の軍勢を従えて､攻め込んで来る。旗色が悪くなった鷲津は､一人で蜘蛛手の森に赴き物の怪婆に伺いを立てる。すると婆は「森が動いて攻め上らない限り､鷲津が殺されることはない」と……。意を強くした鷲津は配下に檄を飛ばし､戦闘を続行するが……!!この映画､ゲスト出演の主演級俳優や､他の黒澤作品でもお馴染みの名脇役俳優が大勢出ているが､殆どが名前のない役だ。武将Ａとか使者Ｂとか幻の武者Ｃとか郎党Ｄとか……(笑)　それと､これは個人的な印象なんですが､黒澤映画においては､あまり女性キャラは重要な役ではないものが多いと思う。だが､本作のマクベス夫人いや鷲津夫人役の山田五十鈴は､数ある黒澤映画の中でも特異な存在感を放っている。城や砦のいかにも堅牢な大セットと言い､なんか"凄い映画オーラ"を纏ってると思う。[余談] CRITERION版の特典映像では､ロンドン映画祭でのプレミア上映のために黒澤監督が訪英した時のことや､巨匠ジョン·フォードとの思いがけない出会いの話が語られます。

Kurosawa pinches from Shakespeare and comes up with a masterpiece. It is not his finest work (see Seven Samurai, Ran, High and Low, etc.) but it is really good. The image quality in the Criterion Bluray is excellent, and there is a nice accompanying booklet and a documentary from It's Wonderful to Create. I didn't buy it for the extras.Every Kurosawa film is worth seeing, but if you're new to Kurosawa, this is not a bad place to start.

この映画を見て一番感じたのは登場人物の目の光り、輝きがくっきりと表現されて東宝版とは格段に向上しているのが分かる。また、細かいデティールが表現されてCRITERION製は凄いと思う。この名作がここまで修復されそれを観れるのは幸せ以外のものでは無い。とにかく素晴らしい以外に言葉が無い、購入してよかったとつくづく思う。

If you like Macbeth and like Samurai watch this film. An absolute masterpiece! Great characters, great story, and a haunting score. A Kurosawa masterpiece!
