Actually, it should work fine. As someone else stated, the spacing is different between 7 and 5 speed indexing, BUT it is the shifter that does the indexing, NOT the derailluer. So as long as you have the correct shifter on your handle bars or downtube, this should work. The reason the spacing is different is because manufacturers used different chain thicknesses and closer spacing to match as they added more gears within the same basis space. The rear cassette is about the same width between a 5 speed and a 10 speed, the individual cogs are just closer together the more speeds you have. The indexing is handled by the shifter... so if you wish to convert from 5 speed to more in the rear, the parts that change are the shifter at the front and the chain when you go from 5 to 6/7/8, then again to 9 and again to 10. I recently converted a recumbent trike from 7 to 10 speeds in the rear using a Sunrace freewheel and KMC 10-speed chains with MicroShift bar-end 10 speed shifters using a Shimano 9 speed rear derailleur. Shifts great. Only reason I changed the rear derailleur out was due to slop in the 7 speed one that made it not shift or skip shift in certain gears. I used this on my son's hybrid mountain bike for the same reason and it shifts great.

Yes, friction shifters are a basic shifter equipped on many bikes as long as they are in working order, cables not seized and move freely inside cable housing. This works on old and new bikes regardless of its year as long as the bike has 7 or 8 speed cassettes that would be multiple cogs or sprockets , they have been called attached to the rear wheel.
