What is the maximum width allowed for the leg to fit in the attachment?

These hinges will fit on a 1.5" wide piece of wood. You can use a wider piece, but if you get more than about 3 inches, I would use a different hinge. These hinges work great, but I had to soak them in 3-1 oil and repeat opening and shutting them to get them to work. Now, they work good, but you have to remember that they will open by simply pulling them open, but to close, you must first press the lever down before it will unlock. Hope this helps.

Do they wobble or have any play in them

Mine do not lock and have some wobble. They do wobble. I'd say they have at least 1/16 play

How would they be for outdoor use?

I assume they are not for direct exposure to wet conditions, especially salty water. I would not use them outside.
