An excellent series about WW1
Superb series, I have it on VHS but one of the cassets broke, so I'm looking forward to the DVD version. This series about WW1 gives an excellent overview into the course of the First World War both at a personal and at a national level. A lot of detail is provided but it does not lose sight of the bigger picture of the war and its aftermath and Dame Judy Dench gives the programme a wonderful narration. For those wishing to start out on studies of the First World War then this series would be a great place to start.

One of the best documentary films about WW1 ever made.
This television documentary is well made and the footage of the battlefields still shock the viewer. The soldiers of both sides were put through the worst conditions that any human beings have ever suffered at that time. Sadly the war to end all war didn't.

Subtitles can easily be removed
Narrated in English by Judi Dench and comes with Dutch subtitles by default. But the Dutch subtitles CAN be turned off. Im watching this on my Playstation 4 with the subtitles removed. When the the disc is playing press 'Options' on the controller, this brings up a menu, scroll to subtitles and you will see Dutch is set as default. Change to 'Off' and the subtitles are gone. Make sure you do this only whist the documentary has started playing, to access this options. These options don't seem to appear when on the home screen menu.

Buyer beware...
Obviously, I have no problem with the content. The series is THE best ever regarding the social/historical impact of the The Great War and it's lingering legacy for all history to the present. However, the Dutch subtitles will for no apparent reason (and after the feature has been switched off on the menu),occasion flash briefly onscreen. The distraction is a huge drag on the viewing experience and I would caution all considering the purchase to weigh this considerable "con". Thoroughly bummed.

A good effort
Quite good, but it is a pity that the material available for WWI is not of the quality or variety to enable the makers to produce a masterpiece comparable to its WWII sequel "The World At War". An intelligent account of an overwhelming subject, and I recommend it.

title
I got this dvd a few years ago under it`s original title 1914-1918 from the bbc, so read title carefully otherwise you end up having two copies. The original copy has the names of people that give there comments and what they do. This copy from holland does not apart from that it gives a good account of world war one , most enjoyable

Dutch
It’s first language is Dutch so you have to keep switching to English each time you play the disc. Also the menu is in Dutch with no facility to change to English

Originally broadcast by the BBC 'Tonight' programme and gathering together ...
Originally broadcast by the BBC 'Tonight' programme and gathering together such talents as Antony Jay, John Terraine - writers and Producers Tony Essex and Gordon Watkins, this Dutch version which gives no credit to the original Production Team, is a timely reminder of the futility of war and remembered 2014 on the outbreak of World War I.
