Q: Instead of mounting it from the ceiling can I mount it on a solid surface pointing up?

Interesting question. the structure of the mounting pole would not be a problem. Its very strong. However, I think you would have a problem with it tilting and falling over unless you widened the base mount. when mounting it from the ceiling you can count on gravity pulling it straight down so there's not an issue of horizontal forces. but if you mount it from the ground any off axis tilt would pull on it to fall over.

not sure what you mean by "either one of the 90 degree holes". But I mounted it on a flat ceiling in my garage using the 4 holes in the mount.

You can mount it easily to the BOTTOM of the rafter if the rafter presents a face that is at least 2 inches wide. In my video, mine is mounted onto a plywood ceiling that has a nominal 2 x 10 ceiling joist above it (behind it). Four lag screws secure it to the plywood & joist. This product is solidly built. I can spin our TV to face different directions in our studio, and I KNOW that it will NOT ever hit the blades of my ceiling fan because it is SO solid. Notice that the hanging arm will only pivot along a straight line in two opposite directions. Study the video, and then make your plan accordingly.
