Lactic Acid for Skin Peels
It is best practice to consult a dermatologist or doctor and learn about your individual skin type and skin peel products. However, if you wish to attempt to make your own lactic acid peel, this lactic acid may be diluted with water to a very small percentage, such as 1%, and tested on a small area of skin to get an idea of your skin's sensitivity and reaction; especially if the target is facial skin, which is likely to be much more sensitive. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) expert panel has determined that lactic acid is safe for use in cosmetic products at concentrations of up to 10%. 
It is important to proceed with caution and patience; only increasing the concentration by small increments (such as 0.5%) and testing the solution on small areas of skin to avoid burns or negative results.

If you find the concentration to be too high, be sure to rinse the area of skin very well with water. As a humectant, lactic acid can enhance the skins pliability and ability to absorb moisture and lotions; it may be beneficial to apply lotion after lactic acid usage.

Lactic acid peels that are mild and of less intense concentrations, can typically be used 1-2 x/week, while intense ones are not recommended for usage more than 1-2 x/ 6-8 weeks. Peel concentration and results are affected by individual skin type, frequency of application (concentration), and methods taken to provide skin care after and between peels.

*As a pH adjuster, this acid may not be compatible with other skin care formulations if applied to the skin at the same time or within a similar time frame. The pH level may be an important factor of many such products, for example anti-aging formulations and other AHA formulations, and interaction with lactic acid or other peels may have a negative effect the performance of those products.

!UV SAFETY NOTE: AHA's including Lactic Acid may help exfoliate skin, promote cell turnover and collagen growth, and is used in various anti-aging formulations; but they may increase UV sensitivity for up to 1 weeks after each application to skin. Sunblock, cosmetic sunblock, or other methods of UV protection are highly recommended while using lactic acid or other AHA skin products.
