Balian of Ibelin travels to Jerusalem during the crusades of the 12th century, and there he finds himself as the defender of the city and its people.

Great movie
I like action movies and this was full of action. I also enjoy military movies. My family history includes many heroes from World War II and Vietnam.

The added minutes cause the story to make more sense.
In it's original form on cable this was a good movie, but the motivation for some characters' actions were choppy enough to border on confusing (the prince's murder, for instance). The characters' motivation were in there, but often so brief that the following actions just seemed like violence for violence's sake (and a lot of that did actually happen in that place and time), rather than a crucial part of the characters' decisions that shaped the rest of the story. This extended version is a gift, one I appreciated. While like most medieval-themed movies it played fast and loose with history for the story's sake, other similar movies' greatest sin is gross inaccuracy in the portrayal of everyday life. The classic example of this is a medieval movie where everyone is dressed in brown or grey, or even worse, all black, or that it's set in the 11th century and the lead characters are dressed and armed in the manner of the 15th century. Kingdom of Heaven stands out for doing a much better job of more accurately portraying the backdrop for their main characters and their stories.Kudos to the studio and others for releasing this extra footage. I'd encourage them to go a step farther and release a version with the best 30-40 minutes that still were left on the cutting room floor, any of it that leads to an even better understanding of the stories. I'd watch it even if it was 5 hours long, as I'm sure they left some choice material out of even this release.

one of the best films ever created
watched this originally when it came out in theaters and this director's cut is the ultimate version. i loved it then and even more now. as someone who has toured eastern europe and Jerusalem... this is a great movie and tells a great story. as a Christian, respect to Saladin and the Muslims - i very much can identify with Balian very much. Jerusalem belongs to no one --- or everyone. love the soundtrack as well by Harry Gregson-Williams - the recording sessions versions has some alt versions used in the film. i love how Scott re-used the song 'vide cor meum' in this film like he originally did in Hannibal - it fits perfect. The actors across the board performed great - Edward Norton, Eva Green, Ghassan Massoud, Liam Neeson, Orlando Bloom and Marton Csokas. one of my favorite movies of all time -

Director's Cut = Different Movie
This was a decent action movie when it came out, but it was sort of buried in mediocre reviews and didn't do well. People bashed Ridley Scott for the film, but this is THE most vast difference between a theatrical release and director's cut I've ever seen and the director's cut nails it where the theatrical version flopped. It's like two entirely different movies.A lot of characters and subplots that were confusing, poorly-executed, or brought up only to be forgotten about entirely in the theatrical make sense in the director's cut. You can tell they just chopped a ton of plot, drama, and character development out to focus on the action sequences, which is sad because without the drama and plot, not many people seemed to care about the action or understand why certain things happened the way they did.We see WHY Balian really is the way he is in the beginning, there are multiple added layers to his relationship with locals (the priest and lord) that explain why they were attacked on the road far better, and it deepens the themes of guilt and doing the right thing despite the wrong thing being an easier path. The power struggle of Jerusalem, Sybilla's marriage to Guy, her son's place in the dynamic, Balian's work as lord of Ibelin, etc. all make the story far richer than the theatrical version and turn it from a stereotypical 00's historical action movie into a legitimate epic.

Better than the OG
Must better than the theatrical release, but some of the story's flaws are still present.

Excellent
Highly recommend watching this 3 hour director's cut version over the studio released version. Its a much better depiction of the cruel and violent Crusades but still manages to portray the faith and morality of the men. I watched both versions and the director's cut is well worth it in my opinion. Spend the extra hour to watch a more thought provoking movie from Ridley Scott.
