Yes, the Biem had to be charged also just like this one. I had one of the first ones that came out, in fact I had 3 of them. The first 2 failed but Biem replaced them. Biem is now out of business. I have had another HSN and that one failed to after a couple of months. I now have this Dash sprayer and have had no problems with it. Now one thing I have found from using these sprayers, all are the same basic internal design with a fine mesh strainer inside the butter chamber. This screen keeps the butter solids from getting into the pump and spray head. The screen over time would plug up and cause the pump to run dry and not work. After a lot of thought about the solids plugging the screen I decided to try clarified butter (no solids) and have not had a single problem since. I now only use clarified butter. Buying clarified butter is expensive but I catch butter on sale and make my own which is very simple. YouTube has some good videos on doing this. I hope I didn't bore you with all this and may have been more than you wanted. I love mine and use it all the time now for everything from steamed veggies to toast to pancakes you name it. Love it. I just wish they design it where the screen could be removed and cleaned.

Even if you refrigerate it the butter can mold and taste bad

I found that heating it up and letting it cool to room temp several times made the butter go bad rather quickly.

Q: How do I get the smell out? The butter smells horrible.. I washed it according to their instructions about 10 times, and it still smells.

Over time mine has that almost rancid butter smell. It won't affect the butter you have in it but I think the smell is there to stay. After an occasional washing with Dawn mine will still have that odor after it dries.
