Q: If I open the basket to shake contents will the timer stop then resume the countdown when the basket is put back in?

No, in some recipes it wants you to shake the basket or turn certain foods, the program temperature and time will continue.

Q: Is there any aluminum in the fryer or the accessories (pans, etc.)?

All accessories are metal or ceramic coated like the fryer. The fryer is steel and the inner cooking area is ceramic coated. This is why I bought it.

Q: will it make a steak?

I have cooked steak, burgers and chicken and it does a great job!! Meat stays juicy and tender.
