Q: Why is it so expensive? it looks like just a few pieces of plastic.

As someone who works in the injection molded plastics business, I can assure you the molds to make these parts are very, very expensive. Even with imported molds, you're looking at thousands and thousands of dollars. The cost of actually making each one is probably below $20 when you figure material costs, machine run time, labor and mold maintenance. But the investment to get to a final product probably requires the sale of several hundred of these before they break even.

Q: The larvae are somehow making it out of the bin and few are using the drop collection bins on the side. Any tips on preventing this?

Mine are making it into the collection bin then crawling out of that. A few have crawled out of the top but not many. Those that escaped will help propagation for further use

Q: Do the mature flies actually breed in the compost bin or do I need a separate area for breeding?

Yes, the mature flies can breed in the compost bin. As long as the temperature is warm enough, the BSF can breed in the compost bin. Please feel free to let us know if you have any questions. Thanks. VermiTek

Q: Is it possible for me to add a heater so i can grow black soldier flys in the winter? my outside temperature in sierra foothills is 25-55f in winter.

Yes, I used to keep my larvae in a shed through the winter in a container with a cover and a 25 watt light. They would eat, but It would not try to get flies to lay eggs.
