My son is learning chess and this is his first board. We love it. It has guides on moves and also has a bonus of being able to playing checkers as well. The pieces are lightly magnetic which is great as the pieces are not hard to move around the board. The design is great to put on display but also to be able to travel with us if we are going somewhere. The board and pieces are well made and look great. This board is great value for money and is able to store all the pieces in their own foam cut out inside the box.

Chess and Checkers Game set========================This comes in a lovely wooden box. The wooden chess pieces are carved well and have thin magnetic discs at their base. The magnets are quite weak, but strong enough that they create a satisfying clunk as you place each piece down. The magnetics are strong enough to hold out against a breeze but not if someone was to accidentally brush against them. (The listing picture has the board at a steep angle and pieces holding strong - it doesn't do that on ours - at that angle the pieces start sliding down). Overall it's good enough although slightly stronger magnets would have been better. The board itself must have some embedded metal strips but they only run under the squares and not around the edge of the board. You can tell since if you try putting captured chess pieces on the outer edge, the magnets within them slide the whole piece towards the nearest square. This isn't so much of an issue on short games, but I like playing long games with my daughter who is learning the game where we leave the board and pieces out where one game could last days. We have got around this by placing captured pieces on a short strip of metal we keep near the board.The checker pieces are really nice, but don't have any magnets in them. This is very unfortunate as they have fallen out of the foam a number of times already while the board is left open and turned up to play chess. We have had to bag the checker pieces up separately.I love there is an extra queen, and for us, a perfect board would have the outer border around the edges of the board to be slightly bigger and have metal in them like the squares, so that the edges could be used for captured pieces, and the checker pieces should definitely have magnets in them too, that way they can be kept in foam without them falling out when the board is used for chess.Currently selling for 33.98
