Jakob Bro: Taking Turns

Consumate ensemble
A late show for an album recorded in 2014. It's absolutely excellent in its conception and execution with each of the players given space to show off their talents, and as ever with ECM recordings beutifully recorded. It's not a 'grab you by the scruff of the neck' listen, but gives up its textures slowly and over repeated plays. It's a true ensemble outing, so it's invidious to pick out individuals. My current two favourite tracks are 'Milford Sound' and excellent 'Mar el Plata', but it's an album that deserved to be sat down and listened to.

An excellent recording from 2014. Concentrated listening brings rewards.

a warm, deeply interactive group collaboration; space-conscious, atmospheric, gentle and hypnotic.
Danish guitarist is joined by a multi-generational cast of improvisers including the late legendary alto saxophonist Lee Konitz, who passed away in 2020, which marks this as one of his last recordings. Lee was my late father's favourite musician and I had the pleasure of introducing dad to him at thge Hull Jazz Festival back in the 90's. The emphasis here is on teamwork. Its a warm, deeply interactive group collaboration; space-conscious, atmospheric, gentle and hypnotic. Im sure dad would have enjoyed the album. Konitz's dusky, bittersweet alto lines have the quality of sunlight breaking through clouds after a storm. Maybe thats Dad winking from Jazz Heaven?
