My students love the portability of these chess sets. Easy to use and keep track of pieces. This is important in elementary school. Much better than cardboard bases.

I like the size of the pieces despite the relatively small carrying bag. The board when unfolded lies flat without ripples and is very flexible and pliable. I was worried that is might be stiff and troublesome when unfolded causing pieces to tip over. But that is not the case. AND the designer got the File/Rank (A-H, 1-8) square designation system correctly marked on all four sides of the board, something that not all inexpensive chess boards get right. I'd recommend this for the traveling chess player as well as the newbie who wants to always have his/her chess set nearby. It easily fits unobtrusively in a suitcase, a backpack, many musical instrument bags or even some briefcases. It's a purchase you won't regret. And if it's a gift for your favorite chess geek, you'll be a hero.

Although the price and construction seem worth it the mat comes folded up in a childrens pencil case. There is a giant crease in the mat and even if you try to lay something heavy and flat on it, the crease will come back when you are forced to fold it back into the pencil case. There is no way to roll it up into the case. Spend the extra 10-15$ on a roll up mat.
