Product Description All thirteen episodes of the popular Doctor Who spin-off series set in Cardiff. Captain Jack, from Doctor Who is in charge of Torchwood - a disparate crew of investigators, each an expert in his chosen field, searching desperately for alien debris that has fallen to earth. They're beyond the rule of law - hired by the UK government and in a race to find the technology before the UN does, so that they might use it to fight crime here on earth. Episodes include: 'Everything Changes', 'Day One', 'Ghost Machine', 'Cyberwoman', 'Small Worlds', ' Countrycide', 'Greeks Bearing Gifts', They Keep Killing Susie', 'Random Shoes', 'Out Of Time', 'Combat', 'Captain Jack Harkness' and 'End Of Days'. .co.uk Review While occasionally clumsy in the way it goes about things, the first season of Torchwood ultimately makes good on its promise to be a science fiction programme for an older market. So while its spun out from the more family-friendly Doctor Who, it does carve out an edgy, entertaining niche for itself. The programme follows the adventures of the Torchwood agency (who we met in far more prestigious form at the end of Doctor Whos second series), a small team led by John Barrowmans Captain Jack Harkness who investigate the extra terrestrial and the paranormal. And across the thirteen episodes of this maiden season, they have a lot to look into, from the likes of a sex-craved alien and cyberwoman, through to cannibalistic foes and strange, spooky fairies. Admittedly, particularly in the early stages when Torchwood is finding its feet, there are a few missteps, and a little too much side-indulgence in exploring material that the more mainstream Doctor Who wouldnt allow. But itd be to your folly to write Torchwood off: by the time it gallops into the second half of this first season, the quality is strong, the storylines are interesting, and the show proves to be a real winner. Intertwining with the narrative of the main Doctor Who show, Torchwood nonetheless then works as an independent programme in its own right, replete with a strong cast of characters (led by the terrific Barrowman) and scripts that have more of an experimental edge to them. Its certainly one of the most interesting science fiction shows Britain has produced in the last decade or two, and theres much to enjoy again and again in this box set. --Jon Foster

Great value for a great series in a great boxset
Being a fan of Doctor Who meant I just HAD to watch Torchwood, and almost straight away, I fell in love with it. Great and highly original sci-fi plots of the kind Doctor Who just won't broadcast, with great writing and great acting make this one of the best science fiction programmes of the decade.I won't go into the plot details but Torchwood revolves around a organisation called Torchwood, who have the job of protecting Earth against alien invaders and utilizing alien technology for Earth's protection. The team consists of a small number of unique characters, from local police-officer Gwen, to misunderstood secretary and tea boy Ianto, and from self proclaimed "Ladies' Man" Owen to introspective Toshiko. The characters are loveable, and totally command the viewers' attention from the moment episode one starts. The episodes themselves contain some highly original plots. There's one episode about a "sex gas" monster which is downright silly, and at the other end of the spectrum there's a gritty episode which sees the team stranded in the Welsh hills with a group of local human cannibals.Torchwood comprises of diverse stories, a little bit of alcohol, sex, drugs, and pretty much everything that Doctor Who doesn't have. It's well worth a watch; you won't be disappointed. Also in the DVD set is the series of short behind-the-scenes episodes (one per episode of the main series). These are also enjoyable to watch, and well worth the price of the boxset.

Russell T Davies.... "T" stands for Torchwood
The single best series (apart from Dr Who) on TV today! This is series one of Russell T Davies's "baby". Torchwood is a science-fiction X-files type show mixed in with a bit of camp/ gay/ soap opera RTD madness. And what makes this show oh so special is the deepness of it - if look behind the aliens, sex and swearing - the series deals with the meaning of life and the importance of human life on Earth making us think how unimportant we might really be. This is where Torchwood really contrasts with Dr Who - which makes you proud to be human - Torchwood shows up the darkest sides of the human race.If you enjoy Torchwood 1 then I strongly suggest you try Torchwood: Complete BBC Series 2 Box Set (2008) [DVD] [2007] which is just as good if not even funnier, and then Torchwood - Children of Earth [DVD] [2009] which is simply amazing.... Then of course roll on 2011 for TORCHWOOD SERIES FOUR!!!!

A cross between a sci-fi series and a soap opera
""The British sci-fi crime thriller for adult audiences will follow the adventures of a team of renegade investigators, led by the enigmatic Captain Jack. It will see the investigators scavenge alien technology in a very real world to solve crime, both alien and human.""I don't normally enjoy science fiction shows, so I was surprised to find myself being drawn into this one. I initially started watching because I liked John Barrowman but by the time the series had come to an end, I'd enjoyed the series as a whole. It's much more character driven than most other sci-fi shows that I've seen and all of the characters bring something different to the show, as well as being rather nice to look at. If you like your science fiction to focus on character relationships, rather than aliens and alien technology, and you don't have any problems with bi-sexuality, then Torchwood is an entertaining and somewhat different science fiction series. If anything, the sci-fi element in Torchwood takes a back seat to the relationships element. Some people have accused Torchwood of focusing too much on sexuality. Whilst this is true to a certain extent - Torchwood is meant to be a sexy series - most of the time it does suit either the character or the story. And apart from episode two which is a bit fruity, Day One, the sex itself is kept to a minimum and is never graphic. It would actually be more accurate to say that Torchwood has a fair amount of sexual innuendo, not sex itself. And during this first series, there are no male/male sex scenes at all, just two or three fairly heavy kisses. There is very little connection between Torchwood and Doctor Who, apart from Captain Jack himself and a kinky cyberwoman popping up. You don't need to have seen a single episode of Doctor Who to get into this series, as it is very much its own show. It's true that Torchwood is a bit patchy, it's true that the characters are not particularly great at their jobs and it's true that the series does have a few large plot holes - like Jack not knowing that they have a cyberwoman in their basement. But if things like this really don't bother you, give Torchwood a go. Generally the second half of the series is better than the first.Captain Jack Harkness - Leader of the group, 51st century time agent who's currently stranded on modern day Earth, handsome, flirty, can notdie using conventional methods, feels negative emotions at times because of his current inability to die.Owen Harper - medic, a bit rough, a bit full of himself, not afraid to speak his mind, likes the ladies.Toshiko Sato - technical expert, perhaps the most 'normal' of the group, fairly quiet.Gwen Cooper - the ex-policewoman who accidentally stumbles upon Torchwood, views situations from a human point of view rather than a hardened point of view, struggles to mix her professional life with her personal life.Ianto Jones - is to jack what Alfred is to Batman, takes care of the Hub whilst the others are away, the youngest of the group, likes to wear sexy suits, quiet and sensitive.

brilliant! even better then Doctor Who!
if you ever watched doctor who loved it but wished it was a bit more darker, mature like other sci-fi shows such as the x files and buffy the vampire slayer e.g you now shows that are dark and not for kids then Torchwood's for you I would recommend it to all older fans of doctor who but even to any one who isn't who likes that sort of dark sci-fi show like the ones I listed above or in that sort of category.it's brilliant and I've found it better then doctor who, that's not a criticism of doctor who I absolutely love Dr who, definitely in top 3 of my Favourite TV shows, I just like Torchwood better so any show that can top doctor who is got to be a brilliant programme.

Thoroughly enjoyable!
This series was the first in a spin off from Doctor Who, after hearing it was going to be written by Russel T. Davies who had been so successful in the Doctor Who series I had high expectations. And I wasn't disappointed, the whole series was brilliant, I will admit the swearing and sex scenes in the first couple of episodes may have been unnecessary but I suppose that is why it is aimed at an adult audience rather than Doctor Who with a slightly younger audience. The box set also includes never before scenes and outtakes and the Torchwood Declassified series! Overall a very good series and I recommend anyone to buy this box set!
