Works fine and looks good, not just for babies
I bought this Tommee Tippee to replace an old listener that was plugged directly into the electrical sockets, but kept me awake at night due to the crackling and buzzing noises it made. My main criteria was that it worked and was silent when it should be! I researched listeners extensively as I did not want to buy something that was not an improvement. The reviews of nearly all of the listeners seemed to be mixed suggesting they were unreliable or that you could be unlucky and get a bad one. The Tommee Tippee was no exception, but I relied on the good reviews and took a chance.Baby UnitThe baby unit is plugged into the mains via a long lead, you would have to make sure baby could not grab hold of this, but it picks up sounds from quite a distance. It also can operate off batteries, but there is no facility to recharge them from the unit. You could use rechargeable batteries but you would have to take them out and recharge them separately. I just use the mains for this.Parent UnitThe parent unit has rechargeable batteries and sits on a charging dock but can be carried around separately, it has a belt clip which I find useful. The parent unit comes with rechargeable batteries, however my experience was that they took 15 hours to charge up and after the second use the parent unit would not turn on. I was about to send the whole thing back, but decided to try my own rechargeables in and it now works fine. That is why I only gave 4 stars, as Tommee Tippee should not have put something out with duff batteries. Other reviewers suggested the units switched themselves off, which may have been due to this. The parent unit does appear to go into a sort of sleep mode but clicks into life when a noise is detected. I have confidence in the unit. There is also a two way talk back and temperature function which is useful. The range covers our whole house. We have not tried it outside yet. Very clear sound. We use the unit for a teenager with epilepsy, so we wanted something that did not look like it should be in a nursery.I recommend it. Good value for money.Update 4 May 2015: We have used this now for a few years and it is still clear as a bell. So have upgraded to 5 stars!

So far so good...
I have just bought this monitor to replace my Tomy TD300 which stopped working all of a sudden. So far, despite this one looking slightly less elegant, I'm all for it. The simple digital display is fine for me, it shows me clearly all I need to know. I can see the temperature in the nursery, the strength of the signal and I can SEE the battery level, rather than just having to guess it by deciphering beeps (as with my old monitor). The lights along the top show noise level which is always helpful but they're not as sensitive as my last monitor so they only pick up noises louder than breathing or snoring, even if you can hear then through the speaker. (So the monitor won't light up the bedroom at night every time baby turns over in his sleep or sucks his thumb loudly!)There are some simple settings you can adjust all from the parent unit (such as volume on the baby unit, parent unit, sensitivity, nursery night-light, language and whether or not you want it display Celsius or Fahrenheit) without creeping into the nursery to change anything!I quite like the shape of this one - odd thing to pick up on I know - it fits quite nicely in the hand and it has a decent belt clip on the back which actually secures the unit to your clothing, rather than just hanging it there. The one good thing I like particularly (and you may not think this is important but believe me it is!) is that this one has just standard AAA rechargeable batteries. My last monitor had a clip-in battery pack (which was just two AAA batteries wrapped together with a plug attached) rather than a slot for conventional batteries. This mean that when it did stop working, I couldn't even try changing the batteries to get it working again. Sounds like a silly thing to matter, but it did for me!All in all, this monitor definitely isn't the prettiest of the bunch, and the parent unit is a bit hefty, but it certainly ticks all the boxes for functionality and so far is doing the job perfectly.

Very happy with it so far
Very happy so far especially for the price. Very easy to set up (Almost like setting up your house phone) Its nice and rather comforting to be able to hear everything from another room and it picks up very well regardless of closed doors or thick walls. I like the light and being able to adjust it though the "Very bright" Option isn't really that bright but good enough to check on the baby without disturbing him.As others have said, the talk back function just freaks the baby out. Try talking back while your wife/husband has hold of the baby in the other room. Poor little thing starts looking around like "Who the hell just said that?" I also like the temperature on both the baby and parent monitors. Great so far, very happy.****Update****Had this a few weeks now and very happy with it. As another reviewer has pointed out the volume can be adjusted as can the other settings so it picks up pretty much everything (It can be really sensitive so much you can sometimes hear things outside the room) The only possible downside is the light isn't really as bright as my first impressions. Considering the price of some of these I do think this represents very good value for money.
