Not in wisconsin winters so I would assume no.

That has only happened to me when it was locked.

Make sure it's in either locked or unlocked position, then bring it back to the center, then remove the key

Q: Can the latch rod be mounted on either side? Or do you have to install it upside down? I need it on the left side of the lock.

Yes this Viper latch is universal and can be mounted on either side, as the brackets on the latch slide out to be turned other way to suit your installation side.
