This is really a great mat. I've compared it to others and I'm going to buy a few more for neighbors who have cats. I bought the 20 x 30 half circle and it works great with my "pie shaped" corner litter boxes. I just plop it down in front of the litter box. It doesn't slip on my hardwood floors. Regarding cleaning, I have one cat who sometimes drops a "gift' on the map. I have cleaned these mats in the washing machine and low-heat drier for almost a year now and they are still in great shape. Hope this helps.

Q: Any insight into why a small fraction of reviewers report the mat is useless, while a large majority report its the best thing since sliced bread?

While I don’t find the mat to be useless, it does slide around on my hard wood floors. I’m constantly having to readjust it, and it hardly ever stays under the litter box furniture our box sits in, so litter gets under the mat, and all around it........so it’s not very helpful, seeing as it’s not nonslip. Unless a small fraction, like me, have very vigorous litter-using cats lol

Q: What is the backing on this mat? Does it prevent urine from soaking through?

Bed protector pads would work better than puppy training pads to protect against urine leaking through. Puppy pads have an attractant to encourage urination so it may increase a cat’s behavior of peeing on the litter mat.
