Cheap Chalk Paint Starts Here
If you're looking to make your own chalk paint at a very economical price look no further! My husband decided he wanted to do one of the walls in our home gym with chalk paint but it can be pretty pricey. We looked up a DIY option and so I came right to Amazon to find the Calcium Carbonate Powder. There were several options but I am so glad I went with this 5lb bag because it took about 4lbs for a gallon of paint and that covered about 15 sq. ft. of wall doing 2 coats. The actual painting process was exhausting (it's a very thick paint once you add the powder so you have to put a lot of elbow grease into the painting) but the results were fantastic! The wall came out beautiful with 2 coats and it's easy to clean with a damp soft cloth. My only big complaints are that chalk markers tend to not work well because they bleed into every tiny imperfection in the wall surface but that's not likely the result of the powder or paint so much as the wall. Just something I felt worth noting to folks who plan to use this the same way we did.Overall, I'm really happy I picked this powder. It's economical, worked well, and comes in a size that is a good match for a single gallon of paint project. Would really recommend it!

If you want chalk like paint at a fraction of the cost, order this! Recipe in this review!
I refinish furniture for a living, so a good paint is my livelihood! I enjoy helping others who share this same passion as me. I want to see fellow furniture refinishers succeed. Good prep and great paint is the way to do so! You can find me on facebook as well, Deer Run Revamps, if you have any questions, feel free to ask away!I've tried other calcium carbonate brands, and I have many half used bags laying around. That's because none of them compete with this one! This 5lb bag lasts me months! And I paint 5-7 days a week. You'll need any paint, latex (these are mostly your wall paints) or acrylic (these are mostly your craft paints), a mixing cup, a spoon, an 8 ounce container (or larger/smaller depending on your needs, just adjust accordingly), 3-4 tablespoons of calcium carbonate (add more/less depending on your preference on how chalky you want your paint), and HOT water.Pour your paint into the 8 ounce container. Measure out approximately 3-4 tablespoons of calcium carbonate and add it into your empty mixing cup. Then, slowly add HOT (as hot as the tap allows) water until you make a thick pancake like batter. If you prefer a runny paint, add a bit more hot water. I prefer thick paints since I mist my surface as I paint to avoid brush strokes. Stir the mixture until the calcium carbonate has completely absorbed, takes about 30-45 seconds. Then add the mixture to your paint, mix well. Now you have a perfect chalk like paint that can pass for any big name brand! Happy painting 🖌

perfect for my use - here's the recipe for the PERFECT chalk paint mix
great product. on my 3rd bag.Do NOT follow the instructions on the bag.I use it with Behr Marquee in a proportion of 2 to 1 (2 parts paint for 1 part c carbonate, NO WATER) mix is EXACTLY like Annie Sloan paint.Actually, I'd say it's better. Here's what I do:- get a PERFECT chalk paint mix - 1 part c carbonate to 2 parts paint. no water required. I normally mix 1 cup of c carbonate to 2 cups of paint (half of the quart can) and can paint 2 very intricate dressers and have left over - mix half of the powder, stir well (i use a $10 dollar hand mixer) and then add the rest and mix some more - until there are no lumps.. Store it in a mason jar and it will keep for months.

Great Product for Making Chalk Paint
I use this regularly to make chalk paint and works great, saves me money not having to buy expensive designer brands. My issue with this purchase, they shipped in a paper mailing envelope, when I opened the bag the powder was everywhere. Big mess. Maybe try a padded mailer?

Wonderful for mixed media art
I don't make the traditional chalk paint. I prefer to mix it with baby powder (starch) and a cheep paint for gesso. Essentially I do mixed media with color pencils, acrylic paint, chalk pastel, and what ever else that makes a fun challenge. Currently I am using this on plywood as a way to fill in wood grain. Any where I don't want it to show through I will use it. The mixture with starch provides an ooblek fluid. Essentially it becomes solid when worked and then returns to a liquid when left alone. However, baby powder in particular will dry and flake off. This chalk did the trick in solving that problem..The whole idea is to get an even layer that is opaque and thick after it dries. I mix in paint and depending on the material I will add a small amount of school glue to the mix. Especially if I am going to use chalk pastel. The glue provides a surface that will take pastels if you time it right. Then when then when I am satisfied with the mixed media I put several layers of clear acrylic gloss to seal it all in after a couple days of curing. Just don't use glue if you plan on using color pencil. That was a big mistake I made on a recent piece. Also do several experimental mixes. The baby powder to chalk ratio is a little tricky at first.

Good but not as smooth as other
I followed the recipe for chalk paint to paint an old buffet. I painted it with two colors using the same brand of paint for both colors but I used this brand for one color and another food grade brand (orange label) for the second color. They both stuck equally well, even with fairly hard hand sanding (after several coats) but this brand was more difficult to get smooth. I used the other brand for another piece of furniture a few years ago and I don't know if that recipe used less calcium carbonate but in any case that came out much smoother than this brand. Waxing with a good brand wax gave it a nice sheen and made it feel smoother too.
