recommended if you already have the battery
It has about 142 AW suction power (AW = 0.117254 * CFM * water lift"), 29 min of battery life on high, 64 dBA (compare with Dyson V8 w/ 115 AW, 40 min, 70 dBA); very ergonomic design; recommended if you already have the battery. Don't expect suction power comparable w/ vacuum cleaner using household power (@200-300+ AW) -- I use it for the camper.

Perfect product for general light cleaning needs, provided you respect it's obvious limitations.
I bough this vacuum after careful consideration due to its relatively high cost. I already have invested thousands in top quality, commercial grade makita cordless tools that provide speed and ease of productivity to my line of work- so I already have the batteries and chargers necessary for this vacuum.I figured this unit would be limited in capacity, which it is, of course- only so much energy can be stored in a small battery.Don't expect to suck up a bucket of golf balls with this vacuum, it's no powerhouse, but it does exactly what it is designed to do REMARKABLY well- which is keep your hard floors very clean, and while maintaining several difficult features- no cord, light weight, and very compact. I can vacuum my entire downstairs in a matter of minutes (1300 square feet, all commercial vinyl tile) with very little effort.I have since retired my janitors and standard brooms and dustpan. They've become obsolete. The shipping on this vacuum was two days delayed, so I swept thoroughly the day before this vacuum arrived.I used it the night it showed up, and was very impressed and somewhat troubled by how much it picked up that brooms completely miss, no matter how thorough and carefully you sweep.I use a 3.0 aH battery that I've had for around 5 years, and even running non stop on high, that old battery gets the entire downstairs done without a problem.I live in old growth woods, with one dog and 2 American shorthair cats. This vacuum picks up all the dirt, pine needles, leaf debris, and best of all- the endless flood of shed pet hair that drifts about when attempting to sweep it up with a broom.Every single time I use it, there's a substantial ball of pet hair in the hopper every time without fail- and plenty of other things brooms miss.Pros:Hose is long, I'm 6'1" and never find myself stooping or reaching the end of the hose. Hose is also a high quality rubberized vinyl with a spiral wound steel wire reinforcement. The cabinet is simple, self explanatory, fairly well balanced, effective at its job, and very low maintenance.Cons:The shoulder strap is redundant. I'm not sure who designed it or thought it to be an idea worthy of inclusion, but it only adds complication and confusion to a simple concept.Lack of provided accessories is troublesome, considering the price. Accessory search for this unit is confounding, what you find is limited and very vague as to whether or not what you're buying will fit, and it's not like you're going to find compatible accessories at a local store. All that's included is a hard crevice attachment and a floor attachment and 2 extensions. The floor attachment is about 10" wide. It really should come with a round brush attachment for cleaning dust on elevated surfaces and floor corners, but it does not. I ended up measuring extension diameters (listed only in metric) converting those to standard, and modifying a generic round brush attachment to fit.In summation, this vacuum decimates time and labor to handle cleaning for what I need, bare floors. It's not powerful enough to clean rugs or carpet satisfactorily, but that's not what it was designed for.It provides floors that I can walk upon barefooted without having a single grain or sand or dirt sticking to my feet, which drives me nuts. It's capabilities are limited, but comeoletdly satisfactory depending on your expectations of what it can do.It works perfectly for my needs- but expect still buy or keep a big corded beast of a shop vac for your more demanding cleaning needs.

No suction, hose falls off
This vacuum is bad. It has poor suction and the hose constantly falls off of the handle in use. The shoulder strap design makes the hose constantly bump into you and is quite awkward to carry. And to top it all off I returned this piece of junk and the seller charged a restocking fee claiming it works fine. Yeah it takes five tries to pick something up and the hose keeps falling off, works fine I'm sure if you test it for five seconds.Would not recommend it even if you have the batteries already.

It's the worst Makita tool that I own
This vacuum is terrible... a slight bump will knock the dust collection bin out and potentially spill its trash. The bin itself is made from several pieces of plastic and the bottom has fallen off. The vacuum canister is awkward to carry yet the strap and light weight won't let it roll on the floor. The wand and nozzles don't latch and fall apart easily. The motor has an annoyingly loud pitch and suction is mediocre at best. I'm incredibly disappointed in this tool.

Makita quality
Perfect for hardwood floors, probably the best.

1 year of use and still love it
I already had the white compact cordless handheld Makita vacuum which worked really well. But, I injured my wrist and elbow and needed something that would take most of the weight from the hand. So, I looked for portable, cordless vacuums that had either backpack or shoulder straps as well as replaceable batteries. I still use both vacuums and find this canister one to be MUCH easier on my tendonitis-prone right elbow. It has great suction power for bare floors and low to no pile carpets/rug. The canister is wonderfully easy to empty out. You do have to pull some hair out if you have long-hair shedders (me). I just had one problem that was easy enough to fix with a layer of saran wrap between the two poles to keep them from separating while vacuuming.

Awkward and no power.
Sorry but this vacuum is awful. Hardly enough suction for a linoleum floor with lightweight grit. The top constantly pops off and hits the floor when you carry it. It is very awkward.

Good for car cleaning
Concerned with the ever escalating price of spare Dyson handheld vacuum cleaner batteries and a run time which is not all that great, I thought I would give the new Makita battery powered cyclone vac a try. I already have a big collection of 18v batteries for my various Makita power tools. A big plus is the low price of spare Makita lithium ion batteries compared to Dyson and the run time on a 4Ah battery is way superior. The charging time is much quicker than Dyson, only around 30 to 40 mins as opposed to hours. These days any quality power tool manufacturer who does not provide lithium ion battery chargers that can fast charge 4 or 5 Ah batteries in between half to three quarters of an hour is insulting the customer.I tried this cleaner on the car interior today for the first time, and have to say that the performance is much better than I first expected after reading some reviews. It collected all the fine grit and debris out of tight corners much better than the Dyson hand held DC31 and DC35 I have been using for some time now. I know there are much newer and more powerful version of these Dysons on the market, but the latest model is now much too cumbersome for use in the tight confines of a car interior. The Makita is much easier to manoeuvre between and under the seats because the bulky motor and dirt collection part can be parked on the seat and there is only a lightweight nozzle and long flexible hose to move around. Unlike the Dysons, the cleaner stays on until you press the off button so you do not have constantly squeeze the on switch. This cleaner is much quieter than a mains powered cyclone which I have found to be too loud inside the close confines of a vehicle. Another advantage is no trailing extension cables across the pavement if you have no drive and need to park in the street.

It’s good, not great
This is my office vacuum. It gets used a couple of times a week and does fine on the floor/area rug, but this is not a vacuum you’d use for thick carpet…it just doesn’t have the power to do real vacuum work. On the other hand, for my use, it’s, well, fine…I guess.Pros: I can use my existing batteries. I can do my office several times before I need to charge the battery. There’s no cord to deal with. It’s easy to empty. It will roll behind you, but it’s also light enough to just carry.Cons: Suction is lacking. Crevice tool is a waste of plastic unless you cover the extra hole it (which instructions say you shouldn’t do, otherwise the vacuum could over-heat).I got this on sale, so it made sense, but even at that reduced price, this only gets a 3-star rating. Had I paid full price, I would have returned it and perhaps gone with one of the stick vacuums.
