Replacement for Simpson Lawrence Horizon Windlass
I bought this as a replacement for my Simpson Lawrence Horizon 600/900 windlass. It has exactly the same bolt pattern. It was a super easy swap and was powerful enough for the 150' 1/4" rode.1. Cut the wires from the old windlass2. Unbolt the old windlass and use the studs since they were the correct length without trimming.3. Bolt in the new windlass4. Reattach wires and done.

It is great looking and well made.
The Lewmar windlass Proseries 700 is powerful and compact. It is also well manufactured. This helps to keep it from binding and slipping on my rope and chain rode. I have a 32 ft cabin cruiser so the compact format serves to conserve precious bow space.

Happy with this windlass with some caveats.
I just purchased the Lewmar Pro 700 from Amazon to replace the same unit previously installed on my Sea Hunt 234 LE. I’m not sure how old the first windlass was as I purchased the boat last year with the windlass on it. My boat is a 2014 model, so call it 6 years old or less. The problem with the first unit was that the gear box had water in it, and the gears and bearings were all severely corroded and the unit stopped working. Clearly the gasket for the gear case failed at some point. I don’t know how or why that happened, but I was not too pleased about it.The replacement works well and as long as this one doesn’t leak, I am generally pleased with it from an operational standpoint. Time will tell. One design I ssue I do have is the friction lock for the Gypsy cones. The manual basically says to torque the friction nut down tight. I don’t think is should be torqued all the way as Gypsy will not turn if there is any binding. Though I am really careful to always motor up to the anchor when retrieving and to not haul the boat up to the anchor with the windlass, the anchor really slams into place once it enters the bow roller and sets into place. This puts a lot of strain on the gears in the windlass. I’ve tried to time the release of the switch to keep the anchor from slamming home, but it is difficult if not impossible to do this. So, I have tried different torque settings on the Gypsy to keep it tight enough to handle normal retrieval, but to slip as necessary to prevent stress on the unit when the anchor sets in the bow roller. I contacted the factory about this but they could give me no guidance.I would advise people that buy this windlass to pay attention to how tightly the Gypsy cone nut is torqued and to make sure the cones are greased properly.Otherwise, the windlass works and looks great. If I can find the sweet spot for the Gypsy cone nut torque, and if the gearbox stays dry, I’ll call this a 5 star windlass. I was pleased with the seller. Product arrived on time and as advertised.
