The stories are not too great, so check how sensitive you are to not-great storytelling.
This book does what it's intended to: It delivers quite interesting stories that will be a step-up from brain-dead children's reading and that kind stuff.Unfortunately, Olly is not a fiction writer and it shows. The stories aren't up to snuff with actual good entertainment, so if you're really picky with your fiction, you might be better off pushing through some simple Murakami or easy manga. If you don't care too much however, this might just be perfect for you!

As someone else said; good concept, failed execution.
No handy English vocabulary, and generally unfriendly to use. The vocabulary is not on the page where it needs to be. Lingo Mastery is a superior series. Richards should take note.Very disappointing.

Good intermediate reading practice
I have noticed a type so far but I like getting to read and expand my vocabulary in Japanese.

Chapter names are garbled
After waiting for months for this book to finally get released, I was looking forward to diving into the short stories as I had with Olly’s previous Japanese books. The first thing I noticed was that the chapter names are garbled. See included screenshot. Hopefully the rest of the book is readable.Update: this ebook is a mess. You can't zoom in, can't highlight or select words to get definitions. How is this supposed to help you learn the language? Very disappointed.

Good concept, failed execution
Olly's StoryLearning method is fine and the content is engaging enough, but I bought the Kindle version and after innumerable delays in delivery, the user experience is awful. As another reviewer mentioned, the Table of Contents doesn't render kanji correctly, so it's unusable. The font is small and there's no way to increase the font size to accommodate my poor vision, can't switch to night mode, can't do the "quick scan" through the pages like most Kindle books, can't highlight, can't copy text (helpful when learning a language to paste into dictionaries), and on and on and on. Just terrible. I would not recommend this as an eBook.

Excellent for intermediate learners
I've bought a lot of Japanese short story books and either lost interest in them, or they were too difficult. This book has been great though, because it's right in that happy medium of difficulty and the stories are actually interesting. There's little mysteries and plot twists to keep the stories fun, but at the same time, it's not too complex. There's furigana, and uncommon words are in bold font with the definitions in the back of the chapter. I've read 50 pages so far and found only one typo (I asked my tutor for clarification, and he confirmed). The one typo is the only reason for giving 4 instead of 5 stars. Overall super happy with this book.
