This item is a 1st. generation playstation vita. The 1st. generation has an oled screen. The 2nd. generation which is the ps vita slim has an lcd screen. One thing to note is that since this blue ps vita is from japan, it's "x" and "o" control scheme is different. So here in North America "x" is used to accept or continue while "o" is to go back or decline. In Japan, the roles are reversed. But yes, this item has an oled screen.

The current software on the PS Vita is 3.65. This update released-April 18 ,2017.You should always have your PS Vita updated to the latest version. Any more questions?

Q: For this unit does it only play japanese vita games or is it compatible with american made games too?

The Vita is not region-locked, so it does not have a problem playing any of the games on the hardware. The only thing that matters is what region you set the memory card up with. Each region has a different PSN accounts and they will require a different memory card. All games can be played and updated regardless of the region, but DLC is specific to the region of the game and will require that region's PSN account.
