Best wireless router I've ever owned, and it should get better...

The EA4500 and its predecessor, the E4200, look identical from the outside. Odds are that they're very similar inside as well, which is good because the E4200 is one of the finest wireless routers on the market. It was on my wish list right up until the EA4500 came out.As other reviewers have noted, setup is easy. Plug the router into the wall, plug it into a computer, and walk through the painfully simple CD setup wizard and you're up and running in minutes. If you want advanced configuration options, point a web browser at it. (I've posted a few interesting screen shots from the web interface.)My home was built in 1994, and is 2600 square feet. The worst part is that our cable modem is located on the opposite end of the house from where I normally use my laptop. Getting a signal all the way to me has been problematic at best. In desperation, I modified an old WRT54G router to act as a repeater, to give me enough signal to work with. Now that I have the EA4500, I've been able to unplug the repeater. I don't get a fantastic signal at the far end of the house, but I get enough to work with. That's an impressive feat as far as I am concerned.I've found the reliability of the router to be extremely high. No problems of any kind since it came online. Never had trouble getting a signal anywhere in the house. I can't say that for previous routers.Depending on your sense of aethetics, the EA4500 is either a sleek looking piece of high-tech gear or a dull black box. Personally, I like the look of it... not that I sit around staring at it.While Cisco touts that the "A" in the "EA4500" name stands for "Apps", they have yet to really deliver on that. The Cisco Connect app for mobile devices allows you to connect to the router and do some basic management, but nothing you can't do through the browser without the app. They're promising a "Cloud" app later this summer that will give you access to your home network while you're away. When they deliver that, this router should really shine. Imagine being able to get to your music files, movies, eBooks, etc., from your smartphone, tablet, or laptop - even when you're miles away! That will be something. (Even if Cisco never delivers the software, the EA4500 is an excellent router without it.)But if you have no need of that functionality, you may want to look at the older (but less expensive) E4200.

Better coverage & works perfectly

I finally replaced my old blue 2 antenna Linksys wireless G router. I did some research and (as expected) the reviews took some time to wade through. The router I was replacing was my second Linksys wireless router. The first lasted several years and so did the second. Given that Cisco took over Linksys, I was cautious and did a lot of reading first. This router was more expensive than either previous router. It has some bells and whistles that I may or may not ever use... I'll update this review If I give them a try.Meanwhile, the set up was a breeze. If you have set up a router before, you know it should not be rocket surgery to get everything connected and working. ONe thing I did pick up from the reviews was the potentially buggy Linksys software. So I opted for the old school setup. Disconnected the old router and unplugged everything right down to the cable modem. Then, starting at the wall, I reconnected each piece of hardware. I plugged my laptop into the router and Windows H8 (hate) spotted it and tried to take over (imagine that). I pointed my browser to the modem (192.168.1.1) and it was a simple step by step process to get it up and running in no time.OK - so the goal was better coverage in my basement and on the second floor (the router sits in the family room in a closed wooden cabinet. Previously. my HP laptop got (on average) 2 bars of coverage - occasionally 3 and sometimes one bar. This router has a solid four to 5 bars (5 is max). My iPad had 1 to 2 bars and now has a solid 3 to 4. Upstairs its the same story... better coverage. As for speed - I did not speed test my connection before... but the after is 26Mbs down and 5Mbs up... which is great by most standards for a home cable internet over wi-fi connection. Overall I am very happy with this purchase.

Works great, except . . .

The router was easy to configure and works pretty much as stated but I don't use all of its features as I just use this as a wireless AP. I have owned Linksys equipment for many years so have seen both the great and not so great. This one is pretty good with some annoying traits. The good:- Easy to set up, although I did not use the available setup utility given that I just wanted the AP part of this and not the full router experience.- Fast transfer speeds- Great range, as expectedThe not so good:- The 2.4 Ghz radio seemed to cause problems, I had to turn it off. I have 1 other router in the house for the upstairs, it is also a Linksys but a G router that is also only a wireless AP that runs at 2.4 and when I had both transmitting at 2.4 it was VERY unreliable connecting to either and worse yet staying connected. Once I turned this one off and only used the 5 Ghz radio, all was fine to both connect and to stay connected. This was unfortunate as for example my iPhone 4S can only do N at 2.4 and not 5.- That darn Linksys Logo light on top blinks often and I can't get it to stop! Reading up on this they say this is the result of an error with the WiFi Protected Setup error but I do not have it turned on as I configured manually. I have also tried all of the recommended things like the 30/30/30 reset, checking for new firmware (none) and the like and resetting back to factory defaults and then reconfiguring but NOTHING helps this. Very frustrated with this annoying behavior. Perhaps this is Linksys way of telling me I can only use its "Protected Setup" which is great for most people I suspect but if you have a more complex network than just a single router this is unrealistic. As I said, it works, but this does not instill confidence as my other Linksys routers have worked for years with no problems.
