Q: 1. How hard is a pepper corn to grind compared to a coffee bean? 2. Can a coffee bean fit into this grinder?

1. I suspect that a peppercorn is much easier to grind than coffee. 2. I tried a small coffee bean and it does fit. I would be concerned that the grinding mechanism might become clogged at some point since coffee is so oily. Occasional use might be okay but heavy use would be problematic.

Q: Do theses have a ceramic burr mechanism or steel?

The pepper mill is steel. The salt looks like ceramic.

Q: I understand the quality, but just asking if there's any trick to knowing when the peppercorns are almost empty?

No real trick...I just shake it every once in awhile. If it makes allot of noise, I know it's almost empty.. Most times, I just fill when pepper stops coming out.
