Q: How large of an area does it cover?

This unit can light the area of a studio apartment very well; a larger room would require an additional unit for coverage...if you are lighting for video, you should be fine. If for still photo, you may need to move the lights closer to your subject. Think of it this way...the more experimenting that you do with your lights, the more ideas you will have for their use. This is a cool item to have...spend the time to get to know your equipment.

it comes with 2 remotes, you program each one to its own light. Each light comes with their own remote

Q: Is this stronger than a speed/strobe light?

Not even close, but they have very different uses. Strobes build a charge in a capacitor and unload it all in a large amount of light for still photography. These are more for video, though I shoot both with mine. However, I have to shoot at a very high ISO to use these as main lighting and you pay a price for that in grain/noise. If you're using natural window light, they can be very helpful as fill.
