Q: I don't want to have a towel holder on a side. Can I make this with out the towel holder?

yes, you can assemble the cart without the towel holder. the holder comes as a separate piece that does not require attachment. I did the same thing with my cart and i did not attach the holder. another point: you may want to attach larger wheels to the cart. the ones that come with the cart are too small and make it hard to roll the cart around.

I just measured to double check. The. Island top itself is 43 inches wide, 53 inches wide includes the knife and towel holder.

Q: What are the exact dimensions of the cabinets with the doors closed? I would like to put garbage cans in them and need specific dimensions.

Just over 23 inches tall, 11 inches wide and 14 inches deep. That is the compartments behind the doors without and of the adjustable shelving in them. The open middle section is the same size as well.

Q: How deep are the shelves? Are they 24" deep like the top?

No, the shelves are about 15" deep. The top over hangs in the front so as to work on that side. We really like the island. It fits our kitchen and is in use daily. you can spend a lot more money, but I am not sure you will get much more utility.
