Q: Would this product work with a 1991 PAL megadrive

Don’t really know crap product came from USA pins didn’t line up correctly and bent on arrival don’t waste your money it went straight in the bin .

Q: Will this work with a Sega Mega drive 2?

Supposed to that’s why I bought it but the product is badly manufactured so I couldn’t try it out due to bent pins.

Q: I have connected my megadrive 2 up to my optoma projector with this via the hdmi port, but can't get any sound to come through? any ideas?

You might just need a mini jack to phono from the mega drive (or jack depending on your projector input) along aside the HDMI - some projectors only carry video through HDMI.

Q: Will it work with a Pal megadrive 2? Does it require additional cables for powering the converter? Thanks

I think it will - there's an adaptor for megadrive1, so I assume the main cable is for 2. Also it needs power from a micro USB - not included (phone charger or USB in your computer should do the job)
