Q: Are these good for rain jackets?

They are perfect for a rain jacket. They stick very well.

Q: How do they work? Do you put the sticker on the inside of the hole?

Yes you can. The rips I have in my coat did not have a hole that was missing material, rather the edges lined up but feathers could escape. I pushed the feathers back in so the hole was empty, peeled the patch off, and used tweezers to put the patch on the inside of the hole, then put the edges of the rip back together onto if the sticky side. This made a cleaner look that stopped feathers from escaping and you could not see the patch. You could tell there was a rip, but no matter what you do you will see a repair. At least this way it doesn't matter what color the patch is and it doesn't look like a big sticker on the outside
