Great color range, smooth laydown, good shimmer
I purchased the Derwent Metallic Pencils because I wanted some mineral and metal shades for adult coloring books:1. Coloring gears and metal knickknacks in Daria Song's The Time Chamber (gorgeous and charming, buy it! or the similar The Time Garden -- both available on Amazon);2. Adding dimension to stellar objects in the NASA Earth & Space coloring book (buy it! it's beautiful, unique and gender neutral -- available on Amazon or Blick); and3. Creating a dew-like look to flora in books like Fantastic Planet (unique and fun) or Hokusai: Birds, Flowers and Nature (perfect if you love gradients) -- (both available on Amazon or Blick). The Derwent metallic pencils have been perfect for these purposes. Of all the brands I've tried, the Derwent's are the most color saturated and they have a nice smooth laydown that is almost creamy for a metallic pencil.LABELING: All the pencil barrels are copper colored, with different color caps indicating each of the individual colors. The color name and number are stamped in black at the ends and are easy to read.PACKAGING: The Derwent metallic pencils come in a metal tin. Inside is a plastic tray that has individual slots to keep the pencils from rolling around.COLORS: I partly chose the Derwents specifically because it is the only metallic line I've found that has both Copper and Bronze (though the Faber-Castell Red Line Metallics does have Copper). The Derwent set also includes a red metallic, which can be used to amp up the Copper color. (The Spectrum Noir metallic line does not have red, orange or copper colors, though it does have Rose Gold.)Here are the colors and tones:Silver: what you'd expect, about a middle-value grey.Pewter: a warm dark grey.Gold: a warm orange-tinted gold, which is nicer than some of the yellow-green golds out there.Yellow is kind of a green-tinted antique gold.Antique Gold: more of tan or bronze color.Copper: pretty on the nose.Bronze: actually really an orange, but a nice color nonetheless.Red: a nice rich brick red.Pink: a bright magenta and surprisingly useful.Purple: nice true purple color.Blue: nice true blue color.Green: a teal-tinted dark green.COMPARISON: I have 3 different brands of metallic pencils: Derwent, Spectrum Noir and Faber-Castell (in order of preference.) The Derwents are my favorite, for the reasons already mentioned.Like the Derwents, the Spectrum Noir metallic pencils have a pretty smooth laydown. I think the Spectrum Noir metallic line is useful if you want to do a lot of silver tones -- it includes 2 purples, 2 blues and 3 different silver hues (Silver, Mica, Nickel). However, I find the Derwent line offers an overall more balanced selection of metallics for typical use. The Spectrum Noir Metallic Pencils come in a metal tin with a convenient hinged lid and plastic tray with individual pencil slots. The Faber-Castell metallic pencils are my least favorite. There is very little difference between the 2 pinks, 2 blues, or 2 greens offered. The Faber-Castell metallics are also the hardest of the 3 brands, which makes them less useful for blending and more useful for tiny spaces. The Faber-Castell metallic pencils are NOT labeled by color and there are NO color names on the box even, which I found infuriating. I had to first go online to find out the names of the colors and then mark them with a label maker to tell them apart. They come in a paper box with NO perforation that would have allowed you to fold it into an easel.SHINE: As others have noted, these are metallic TONED, not super glittery-shiny. Like all metallic pencils, they're metall-*ic* not metal; don't expect high-gloss. Personally, I find that the obvious shiny metallics have very limited use and am happy with the Derwents. If I want something to actually look like shiny metal I'll achieve that with shading and blending. Instead, I use the shiny metallics (like Prismacolor Verithin or Premier Soft Core Metallic Gold) when I want a gold foil or stamped look to a design. However, it's worth noting that you can also layer the Derwent metallics on top of the Prismacolor metallics to add more shine to the Derwents if needed, while still keeping the main Derwent metallic hue.BLENDING: Though they're really not made for this, I've found the Derwent metallics do blend well if using a light hand and building the values in layers. (I successfully did a 5-color gradient with them.) I've also been experimenting with using the Derwent metallics with the Derwent Blender & Burnisher set (available on Amazon). The Blender pencil does soften strokes and edges, and I haven't noticed and reduction in shimmer with it. I had hoped the Burnisher would add a high-shine quality to the metallics, but it really doesn't seem to make a difference with any of the brands. I think it is meant for use with traditional colored pencils, not metallics.

Lovely set
Although I loved these, I returned them so I could save up to buy the bigger set. Which of course I’ll be more than happy with. This set was super shiny, loved the colors. I would say great for anybody who colors & wants that extra sparkle or shine. I definitely recommend these pencils to anyone!

Missing the tin case lid
The pencils have a nice color payoff, shine & variety. The blue pencil’s wood was cracked, but I figured out a workaround. I am disappointed the lid was missing for the tin case. Since I am sure the price includes the tin case, I did feel slightly ripped off by it missing.

Nice range of metallics
Kind of expensive but nice soft cores, blendable and no breakage. On regular paper they give a sheen but not so much a metallic luster. Have not tried on black yet.

Derwent's 12 Set of Metallic Colored Pencils
Love these creamy metallic colored pencils on white, colored, especially black papers as they leave a pleasing sheen. Such fun to use! My colored pencil sets only come with gold, silver and bronze. I like variety of colors to choose from in tis set.

They are shimmery.
Very nice quality colored pencils. The coverage is smooth and shimmery!the antique gold and the gold tones are very similar, but that doesn't affect the quality of each one. I'm definitely happy with my purchase.

Meh..
Not as metallic as I was hoping for. Really creamy and thick color placement. Not thrilled with them but are just ok.
