SECOND UPDATE: May, 2017Well, the first one finally stopped working, after daily use for over two years, which is pretty acceptable for something this inexpensive. It began by having issues blinking -- I'd have to press down on the light to get it into "blink" mode, otherwise it just stayed lit, steadily. Tried new batteries, but it seemed something inside the tiny circuit board had become lose or had deteriorated. It worked like that for a few months, then, as of last week, it began refusing to blink anymore, no matter what I tried, and then it just died, a few days later.Fortunately I already had ordered another one, and, with Prime, it was here in a few days, so I replaced the dead one with the new one. I'd say the new one seemed a bit less sturdily built than the first one I bought, plus it had an issue of not being able to move the switch fully to the off position, so I had to probe into the side switch area, with a small tool (a watch tool actually) and moved the internal mechanism downward, so the switch would move fully to the off position. It works fine, and my take on it is that I'd say these mass produced items are subject to quality control issues, of course, so I didn't bother to return it, or swap it out for a replacement, since my repair seems to have fixed the issue.It remains the best type of anti-theft deterrent device that I have found, so, despite needing to replace it after a few years, I'm still confident in my five star review, and what follows is an update from 2015, and my original review.Hope you find it helpful. I finally decided to change them today, simply because I have had electronics ruined by batteries that leaked, in the past, so I was just being pro-active here, but it was still going strong, so, wow, just one more reason to love this very handy "alarm" device! I'd give it ten stars if I could do so!!!My original review, from March of 2015, is found below:ORIGINAL REVIEW:Just adding my very positive review for this terrific little "deception" alarm!About the length of a lighter, but a bit wider, and thicker, it is basically just large enough to house the two AA batteries you need to install. Just slide off the battery cover, and in they go, and PRESTO, you have a fake (but realistic looking -- for the most part) car "alarm" system that you can turn on and off, place where you want it, and use when you choose.I looked at all of the others out there, before deciding on this one, and I chose this one mainly because it doesn't require being "wired" into your car, takes readily available batteries, and also because it seemed to get the best reviews (others were noted for being flimsy, falling apart easily, or looking fake because of either the style of the light inside, or the big "on/off" words written on the side).This one does have a velcro patch, which is meant for a permanent mount option -- stick one side of the velcro where you want the device to be, and then you can attach (or remove) the device as needed. However, because it is flat, I like that I don't need to bother with the velcro -- I can just set it where I want it. It does have an on/off switch, but it's pretty tiny and not easily seen in the dark of the car, at night.I have a secure garage, where I live, so I don't use it there, but it's being out and about that's sometimes a worry, depending on the neighborhood or area, and I've always known that any deterrent encourages thieves to look elsewhere. I have a "club" style rod (pedal lock) that makes it impossible to drive the car (even if someone could figure out how to bypass the keyless start), and it would take a blowtorch to get through it, so that's a main deterrent, but it's nice to have an added visual warning as further discouragement.Mind you, I had a full blown alarm on my last car, including their installed blinking light to show that the system was active (plus the "club" style pedal lock I have now) and still I came down to my garage (not a secured one at that time -- I have since switched garages) one morning to find my back window smashed out and a few dollars worth of things taken. I'm guessing the howling alarm is what stopped them from getting to more valuable things in the glove box or trunk, but it was a lesson to me that thieves will be thieves -- of course, they didn't take the car, so I was happy about that! Just a broken window to fix, and really nothing else lost.This time, I have just the factory immobilization, where the car won't start without the key fob, and, yes, that can be hacked, which is why I also have the pedal lock on there, but, since this car doesn't have the blinking alarm light, I decided I wanted to add that as one extra layer of deterrent, since it is well known that thieves tend to aim for the easiest targets.In terms of performance, the only two drawbacks are the shape (non-standard for an alarm system) and, more obviously, the very tiny black switch on the side -- if someone looked closely, and they were halfway savvy, they'd see the little switch and deduce that it likely is a "fake" alarm, and is just a blinking light. So, if you put it somewhere awkward looking, like sitting on the dash, for example, it would look a lot more like a box with a blinking light than part of a car alarm system, especially in daylight. From that standpoint, I was tempted to go with the little dome shaped one, but that had pretty bad reviews, so I opted for this one instead.Carefully placed (on my car, there is perfect "ledge" in front of the gauge cluster housing, where just the blinking light shows -- or another great spot is down near the ashtray) it can blend into the area nicely and look "official" and the red blinking light (although not as bright as alarm systems I've seen, nor flashing as rapidly) is bright enough to be visible through tinted windows, and looks "legitimate" enough that it can certainly pass for a car alarm. In the darkness of the car interior, the little switch on the side is not easily seen, and, if placed with some thought, it doesn't look like a blinking box, but, even so, I'd just advise not to position it such that it is revealed to be what it really is. In other words, don't set it somewhere to where it seems to stand out as not part of the car, if that makes sense, since most alarms don't have a rectangular blinking box, they usually have an integrated light of some kind.I haven't applied the window stickers -- they seem a little lame, or not believable, simply because they say your car is protected by "Safety Street" which sounds kind of goofy somehow, because it doesn't sound like a "real" company -- and it isn't, so that's not so good. It would've been better maybe just to say "Warning: Vehicle Protected by Alarm" or something like that.For the very small price tag, it's some added peace of mind. Honestly, I thought there'd be more choices out there for an idea like this, since it seems a very smart way to deter a car thief, but, especially of the battery-operated kind, there seems to be very few options. Of the options that exist, for me this one seems best, and I'm glad I trusted the positive reviews and bought it.I'd take away a star, and just leave four stars, given that it could be shaped better (but then would need a different battery, obviously, and at least AA batteries are always easy to get -- not so much with more obscure round or button types) and given that it would be better if the switch wasn't located at the same end of the light (it would be easier not to see the switch if it was at the other end, when recessing the unit into a suitable space in the car) or even if the switch design was more stealthy somehow, and also given the window stickers are kind of goofy, but, since I think it's the best of what's available, and can be made to look pretty legitimate, I'm giving it five stars for doing what it claims.Hopefully better versions will be made (somebody should design one and start a kickstarter thing!) but, for now, this does the job!Highly recommend!

The media could not be loaded. Although the video is daytime, it’s easy to see that this old farm house looks like it’s alarmed. At night the light can be see from a distance. Since the blinker is part of the box, you need to determine how to place it to have the biggest impact. At the pole barn I drilled a hole the size of the blinker and taped the unit to the inside barn metal siding with just the blinker protruding, as shown. It sure looks realistic. If anyone drives around the barn on a dark night they see a blinking red light in front and back. Can’t say how effective it is, but over the years I haven’t had a break in at the barn or farm house, which are both near a road in a very rural area. Another use: leave it on a deer stand that’s hard to find in the dark.

It’s proven to be very useful. I have several & they work as described w/ only a couple issues that I’ve found which is why not 5 stars.1: of the 3 I ordered, 1 didn’t work. But it was replaced immediately w/ absolutely no hassels & I can’t complain at all! So this is actually a plus instead of a minus!2: 2 of them stopped blinking within only a wk or two of use & are just solid lites that stay on now. I was disappointed in that & have to admit they are cheap so I guess I can’t expect too much. As long as they keep working then I can still use them wether they blink or not. They still get someone’s attn (they are brightly lit) & give someone pause to wonder what’s wired up & turned on. Without the blinking, they simulate a night camera!They can be used as suggested in a car; but I’ve found they are great in house windows, & just about anywhere they are protected from rain. So use your imagination & you can find lots more ways to use these either as alarm warnings or night cameras in windows or other places you want to deter people w/ an illusion of security. Don’t let it disappoint you as it did me if one stops blinking & stays on as a solid light. Just use it as an IR camera light instead of an alarm light. I’m not altogether sure an alarm couldn’t have a solid light anyway, & wouldn’t hesitate to keep using one that way, but a blinking light is more what’s expected inside a car. That said, I still have a blinking one that cont’s to work perfectly. I like these very much & wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them. Just be aware of their strengths & limitations & you’ll definitely get your money’s worth out of these! Wouldn’t mind a few more myself.I don’t really know how good the sticky tape is that comes w/ them because I had a roll of dbl stick tape already at my house that holds 15 lbs & is for indoor/outdoor use that I picked up at WM. So I used my own dbl stick tape on these. These only weigh as much as 2 AAA batteries weigh, so I’d think the tape supplied should easily be sufficient for indoor use if a person alcoholed off the spot they were attaching it to & dried it good for a clean stick.

Difficult to install battery's and dull light

I like that its battery powered. Takes 2 AA batteries. None of the solar powered versions get very good reviews. I really like that it has an on/off button. If you drive at night like I do, I need to be able to turn it off instead of it blinking and distracting me. The blink rate is a little slower than I would have liked and not typical of most car alarm light blink rates but it will do. I haven't used the adhesive velcro stickers yet. I actually like the fact that I can move it around and put it away when I don't want to use it so I might not ever use the adhesive. Night time is where I need the most deterrence. At night you cant tell that this is a box shaped blinker so overall I'm happy with it so far.
