I buy this for all the dementia caretakers I know.
This book was the most helpful source of what to expect from the disease as it progresses. Basically it’s advertised as for Alzheimer’s but I have found dementia from most other reasons all carry the same course of progression. It’s the best one I’ve read

Excellent Guide for Care Givers
If you are living with or caring for anyone with memory loss, you owe it to them and to yourself to be aware of how to communicate, live with and be kind to them and yourself. I personally have had three people in my life with whom I either lived or cared for them in their homes. I only had this book for two of those three people and, I believe with all my heart, it helped me to be a better care taker for them. Patience is critical for the patient and well being is critical for the care giver. I'm not a professional care giver, just a daughter and a daughter-in-law who found myself in a position of caring for loved ones who needed help. Care givers also need help and this book tells it like it is.This book helped me to identify when my mother started having problems with her memory; things that I thought were mood swings or behavior issues but were actually the onset of memory loss. This book taught me how to care for my loved ones and myself. It showed me what I needed to do to make changes in living arrangements and gave me guidelines to financial issues. We all need help sometime and this book is a great one for just that reason. This book taught me that I could not do it alone and to seek out and ask for help for my loved one(s) and myself.

Highly recommend
I have recommended this book and purchased it for so many people who have family members going through dementia. It is absolutely the go to book for anyone who has a loved one struggling with this disease. You can just pick and choose what parts you need to read at any time. Best book out there.

The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for Persons with Alzheimer Disease, Related Dementing Illnesses.....
This book was wonderful! It was full of ideas for coping with a person with memory loss. Also, explained how to determine just what kind of memory loss you might be dealing with. Encouraged the caregiver on how to take care of themselves while caring for the others. I feel it gave me hope in those times when all you want to do is scream! It helped to take the mystery out of caregiving for a memory loss person.

Practical and useful but...
This book was recommended to me to help with understanding and decisions that need to be made about an elderly relative. As my relative is already in an assisted living program this book was not as helpful as I was hoping. I would get this book if you are at the beginning of the oddessy of making decisions for caring for a relative. It appears that it would be very useful to people who are caring for an individual in their home and making decisions for full time nursing care facilities, getting extra help at home and day care facilities. This is a very practical book. It does not provide enough information for understanding the psychology of the person with dementia.

Help with caring for loved ones with dementia
I give this book to family members who are caring for loved ones with any kind of dementia. Can read individual chapters for quick help rather than having to read straight through.

Essential for families experiencing Alzheimer's
The small type notwithstanding, this book has been so helpful to us in understanding how to deal with our family member and her spouse. Each experience we have had seems to be covered; I wish we had bought this when we first noticed symptoms, long before she was diagnosed, and long before her spouse would admit there was a problem. However, we did find that when we gave it to the (elderly) spouse, he did not read it and found the large amount of material daunting. I don't think a smaller type face would have helped, as the other reviewers indicated, because it would have then been even a longer, larger book. What he finally *would* read was only a brochure from the doctor, which was very basic.
