Well Thought Out Dish
This item is actually a bit bigger than it seems to appear in the pictures, but not too big for the young cat that showed up a few weeks ago and adopted us. It is roughly 16" by 9-1/2" overall, and the island that holds the two metal bowls is about 12" by 6". The moat is about 1" high at the edge, and the island is about 2" high, or about 1" higher than the edge of the moat. Each bowl is about 5-1/2" in diameter around the outer edge and 5" at the inside. It is easy to clean by simply taking the metal dishes out and wiping or otherwise cleaning the entire thing, then putting the bowls back in. And each bowl can be cleaned as needed without bothering anything else. The cavities that hold the bowls can actually themselves hold food and water, but it's not nearly as easy to keep clean as it is by using the bowls. The moat was what sold us on this, though, where water can be put in the moat (usually from the previous day's water bowl, before filling with fresh water) to keep ants from finding the food. In this regard, it is very effective. The cat likes drinking from the moat, too, so we simply pour enough in there that it won't get dried out. This and other similar dishes are advertised to use the moat to catch cat food bits from going on the floor, which it does, but the ant barrier is the main attraction here. The bits that fall into the moat obviously get soaked, but at least they don't go to the floor and attract ants.

Works great!
This bowl has worked great at keeping ants out of my cat's food. I just bought another one for my neighbor.

LOVE this so much I got 2
I LOVE this because it has 2 stainless steel bowls that hold half of a 13 oz can of cat food each easily. I lift those out before carefully dumping the water out of the back door. (It is MUCH easier than the ones I use outside for the stray cats & that is in another review). The moat is deep and wide and I have a BIG long cat (13.6 lbs) so he eats from it easily. He is a messy eater so it can't mitigate that since he drops food everywhere BUT without the big moat the ants are horrible!!! It happened once. I had cat grass next to the feeder & they somehow got the grass into the food, created a bridge over the moat & used it as a superhighway into the food bowl... ABSOLUTE nightmare!!! I removed the grass & haven't had that happen since. I still have ants cruising around picking up his scraps if I don't mop them up right away BUT it stops a wholesale invasion. I only fill the moat half full & that is enough. It is 1.5" across & 1" deep and it is easier to empty that way. I use a water bottle I keep next to the feeding area & put down the food & then fill the moat from the water bottle. Easy peasy.

I like it, but make sure you have a flat surface
This cat dish is well made and looks nice. It does the job of keeping the ants out as long as you use it on a level surface. We feed the cats on pavement that apparently is not quite level, so unfortunately the water all flows to one side and soon the ants have a dry area to infiltrate. The water also gets messy fast, but hopefully your cat is not as sloppy as mine. Overall, I like it.

Great for keeping ants out of food
I feed a group of feral cats and had a big problem keeping ants out of their food bowls. I bought one of these feeders to test out. It worked great! I’ve now bought several more and replaced all their bowls with them. Safe for the cats and highly effective.

Perfect for The Season of the Ant
We were having horrible trouble with ants getting into my cats' food. I tried putting their regular dishes in water, but eventually they would scooch the bowls to the side of the water filled bowl and the ants feasted while my cats went hungry. This is a great solution! The base is a hard plastic, so it is easy to pick up. The metals bowls are easily removeable for cleaning. The bowls were much bigger than I expected, but my two cats love them. I suppose maybe the smaller bowls were contributing to "whisker fatigue". Kaylee and Captain Tightpants give their new bowls PAWS up!

Keeps the ants away
We bought this and put a little water in the “moat” area of the base. So far we have not had any more trouble with ants getting into the food dishes.
