great steel on a great design
I had the original higonokami in triple layered sk5. Actually I had two of them, I lost one and then bought another because I liked it so much. The friction folding tab makes one handed operation easy, and its not the type of knife that tends to scare the bajezus out of people when I carry it. Unfortunately I live in a swamp and preventing rust was always an issue. Also, the sk5 steel is extremely hard- makes sense as I assume by virtue of it being a handmade knife, the heat treating regimine is extremely good. But that also means it was quite chippy. I've chipped the knife many times while doing basic work- scraping glue off things, carving, etc. Especially with the way the edge is ground (sort of scandi like), grinding out the chips was a giant pain in the ass and eventually I left it alone and progressively got a serrated edge.Anyways, I've been carrying this knife for several weeks now. It's got all the benefits of the original higo knife which I already love, but a seriously superior blade steel that stays sharp way longer than a simple carbon blade and doesn't rust either. The only thing I wish is that they made a smaller version of this. It's a light duty knife for me- I don't need a big blade on it.

A beautiful, simple work of art
It's utter simplicity and impeccable craftsmanship make this knife a joy to behold. A couple of light licks on a diamond stick turned the VG10 blade into a razor.

Great blade
The blade is excellent and a good material. The handle is not comfortable to grip.Convenient and useful for small tasks but I would not consider this if I was using the knife often.

Blade is where the money is at.
Blade is where the money is at. Handle and hinge is just bare minimum.Worth the money if you're looking for sharp good quality blade with no comfort.

Exactly what you think it is
Utilitarian, slim and fits easy in the pocket, sharp, corrosion resistant. I bought a leather pen sheath and stuck this in it and it rides in my jeans penny pocket every day. Basically it's the Japanese equivalent to carrying an Opinel 6, 7, or 8. The only caveat is I recommend getting a pen sheath for it, because the hinges loosen up over time and you can carry it lose in your pocket once that happens.
