Keep Your Expectations in Check
I love Hunter X Hunter, so obviously any movie featuring the characters would be of interest to me. However, The Last Mission falls short of building excitement for its series in the same way that the latest Broly movie did for Dragon Ball. It's not a bad movie by any means, but it's a bit generic and full of missed opportunities. The plot takes place after the Greed Island arc, but before the Chimera Ant stuff gets into full swing (although it's mentioned that they've met Kite at this point), and it revolves around a group called the Shadow who were thought to be snuffed out by Netero long before the series start. They've since been revived and are seeking revenge on all Hunters (yawn). They do this by attacking the Heaven's Arena during a tournament and taking Netero captive while demanding that the secrets behind their existence be revealed to the world. Many fan favorite characters are all there, such as Hisoka, Biscuit, Zushi, and Wing, but they are poorly utilized and do little to contribute to resolving the crisis (save for Hisoka, whose role is fairly passive in this film). Also, there were a frustrating number of sequences where a battle is about to take place only to cut away to something else and then return when the fight is over. Zushi fans looking to see how would've handled a fight with one of the antagonists got ripped off, I feel. The finale resolves itself in a predictable and generic matter as well.If you're a HxH fan like me, it's still worth picking up just to see another short adventure with some of your favorite characters. Just keep in mind that it's not going to be as enthralling as something Togashi himself would write for the series proper and you'll have a far more enjoyable 90 minutes.4/5 stars on principle of being HxH, loses a star for not being exceptional.
